Marmalade Dog Fifteen results

I would like to thank Eric for organizing this outstanding tourney. It had a really good turnout with 23 players in the 100, 23 players in the 150, and 26 players in the 200 with 26 total entrees. I would also like to say playing 12 rounds in about 13 hours is very tough. We had 4 great trophy’s given by the Olivet College SWM Club and hand panted by Jake Schuler and Eric Larson had some Star Wars toys and a 3D cast of a section of the Death Star map for the top 4 in each point format. I would like to congratulate Bill Russell on a great day only losing one game to Eric Larson. I really hope the regional in Lansing Michigan has this good of a turnout.

Thanks to everybody who came and to Eric Larson, Jake Schuler, Scott Sykes, and Deri Morgan for the prizes and making sure the tourney ran well.

That sounds like a great event. Congrats to everyone! It looks like Gen Skywalker is rather popular in 150pts, eh?

I think what a lot of people learned from this event, was that the combination of rule changes DCI made in January really have improved the game tremendously. Very few games went to time (Lou wasn't kidding when he said we finished 12 rounds in 13 hours, with two 45 minute breaks). We also did 50 minute rounds, and people were still finishing.

The map list, the figure choices, and the mindset of players (we were using the 2pt 3pt system for overall results), all put the players in the correct mindset to try to finish their games. Many of those that did not finish were based on one player being relatively new and/or young, or the occasional bad match ups (stalemate situations).

But there weren't many of those at all in this event. And many of those, were high scoring games as well. For example, one of my own two games that went to time against Sithborg in 200pts, was about one round short of completing (we played about 8-9 as it was). He had a 10hp Tyranus left, and I had a 30hp or so Vader - both were likely to die next round.

Very few people ran "camping" type squads, and those that did were generally smashed by the better players running more in your face builds. It was literally shocking to see that many players finally buy into something I've been claiming for a couple of years, that melee when played well competes just fine. In fact if you watched these tournaments, you would actually have to admit that melee is better than non-melee in the game right now, with the current DCI rules at least to some degree. There were shooter squads that did varying things and were successful, but most certainly they were the ones that included other significant gimmicks, and were played by top players.

Case in point, I was able to beat Deri's 150 shooter squad, with my melee squad, by basically carefully timing my run across his map (Jedi Temple) from corner to corner (he was wisely camping as much as possible). This would be a situation that most players would not attempt, nor be successful at, but I timed it well, took the appropriate chances, made a couple of saves and defeated his squad under the time limit. Doesn't mean my squad was better, but the rolls weren't that bad either way, he had the map advantage, and the range advantage and I won the game. Things that some of you claim are not possible, or not normal. In this case it was.

Anyways, my point is, melee competes, players can complete games in time, and its absolutely a blast to play out your games rather than finishing every round at a 42-28 score (multiple people mentioned this). Several people said their "skepticism about the rule changes was now gone - and that the rules are excellent".

yeah, most definately the rules of the tie breakers helped speed things along greatly but i think the real change is the map choice. I don't ever remember thinking "i'd better speed up or i'll get a 2 point". You have to play your game no matter what your time constraints.

None of the maps allowed a Taris/deathstar stalemate as both sides on each map are fairly accessible to gambit which is massive for aggressive squads. Its funny that now one of the shootiest maps is the Rancor pit with huge LOS deep into enemy territory from each side with few doors to hinder shots.

I stayed pretty much on my own side against Bill in the 150 giving up gambit hoping to get some set up shots on R2 to slow his advance but a few placement errors on my part and good placement on his basically allowed him to get too close too soon. It made me question my map choice but i didn't expect someone to run sheer power over panaka and my squad was designed to inhibit the swap. I had no problems finishing any of my games with my squad.

There was a massive amount of of Yo-buck/G.sky/panaka squads running around in the 150 which is probably a gatekeeper in 150 and 200 at the moment. I imagine the fact that it didn't win probably means that people will look to other squads to perform. Rebels took a hit in 150 with virtually no-one running them and perhaps i was the only one at 200?

Great tourney!

Shawn ran Rebels at 200. Though I think that only included Leia Bounty Hunter and a couple of Bothan Nobles

I do think the 2/3 format was in effect with 2-3 of my games last weekend but I did not go out of my way to make sure they ended but to make sure I had a chance to finish them. The new rule that I used well was the 5 rounds no combat rule. Again glad to see 26 people at a small time convention.
