I'm leaning towards b) since stsparks is happy he got attention.

It's a pity he had to be so immature and pull a TS, but I guess sometimes you learn a person's true nature in an unexpected way.

NAh,Sparky's not like that. He's an HOF member himself. but honestly I don't know his motivations. perhaps he's just disalusioned(sp?)
He may not seem like that to you, but it could merely have been a front. Like hiding your presence in the Force... :P

I guess I'm pretty lucky. I've never recieved any abuse about it directly.

I think the process is fine, but the HOF has so few members right now that it is percieved as bushleaguing. It will not be percieved as such in a year or to when there's more members.

It isn't bush leaging now though. although I'm friendly with most the members, Dean is really the only guy I really know on a personal level, and that wasn't even until after I'd been inducted.

I just know I'm not going to get over emotional about it like I've done in the past.I know the truth about theHOF and it's good enough for me.

Well actually I can tell you what it is. I think there are people - and I have received several PMs/e-mails about it, especially since that thread went up - that believe everything should be said out in the open.

I agree, and I will never support such a move. Its about confidentiality and respect for the privacy of the nominees. I don't think it's right to expose our private discussions to the public, where anyone with a username and with any motive can read them and use them against us. Further, there are things said that could be hurtful to the community if they were public. You might not understand that from the outside, and I am not going to go into details here either. But it's true nonetheless. It's just such a bad idea. Sparky is welcome to his opinion on it, I just wholeheartedly disagree with it. I don't like that he keeps taking it to WotC, but I've asked him to stop and he hasn't. I don't think he wants to intentionally subvert the HoF reputation, but that is the net effect of his now multiple threads.

Further, the idea that the community vote alone should determine the members simply turns the HoF into a popularity contest, and makes the process more or less worthless. Sorry, most people aren't going to take the responsibility to read through all of the applications carefully, and participate in the discussions, and so on that we expect our HoF members to do. Not to mention the opportunity for "cheating" that would be present.

Further, if you want even more reason, look at what happened last year when the HoF did not take a couple of the top community vote getters. Even though it wasn't a knock on those people at all, and in the end we just had better candidates than what the community said were their top 3, people still got upset about it. Its a reality we discussed in the HoF chat before hand knowing it would happen, and we still went forward with the list of people who got the votes. Why? Because we believed we did the best job possible and no one to this date has submitted to me that any one of the people in the class of 2009 was not deserving.

I agree with the way the process is done now, and furthermore I don't see the selection process as a privilege, but as a very serious responsibity. And it's one that I don't take lightly.

Thats what most these folks don't get. They can be bitter and hateful all they want. But at the end of this day it's an honor and a responsibity, that really has no privelges whatsoever.

Controversy, in my mind, means that the HoF is working as intended. If there were no controversy, I would translate that to mean that the HoF has little meaning to the community at large. Think about every other prominent HoF. Every one of them has people that aren't in it with fans of those people who passionately argue about the need for those people to be inducted. Just about every one of them also have people who disagree, vehemently, about the process of induction. Now think about the large number of HoF's out there with absolutely no controversy. Can you name any? It's not that none exist... but can you think of even one (without using Google and the like)?

Sounds like the SWMHoF is working just as it ought to.

I, personally, think that every member deserves to be there. I also believe that there are some people who are not indcuted who deserve to be. But I also understand how the process works and I happen to agree that it currently works in the best way that it possibly can, if it's to mean anything at all. Just because my opinion about who isn't in the HoF differs from, say, Bill's opinion... it doesn't mean that I'm right or that I'm wrong. It just is what it is. I think Person X should be in the HoF. They aren't. Maybe one day they will be. End of story.

See how simple that is?

How did the very first members get into the HoF? Who decided on them?

So the first class was just a straight vote in?

yes the first member were a straight shot in.

The first class afterwards were nominated and voted in.

After that it became like a regular Hall of Fame as fear of popularity contests versus deserving became a worry.

So now there is a check and balance.

Only the community can nominate. The members can only vote on what the community presents to Hall. That way the community cannot have a popularity contest and in reverse the Hall is not a good ole boys club.

Each member of the community gets 5 nominations. The members of the Hall only get 3 votes. They can only vote on the top 15 nominees. The top 3 of the 15 nominees also get an automatic community vote towards their induction into the hall.

an auto inducted member was Sarah and was a member of the international gaming community.

We have selected one of the interantional guys that are good at the game and helped grow it overseas in an attempt to bring the international community in with everyone. We plan on possibly inducting another member of the international community. We are hoping this brings us closer with them as well as other efforts that are going on to kind of make the gaming globe smaller.

Right now it seems there is the N AMerica/ Europe and then a smaller Asian community.

We would like to get all of these community's closer and sharing more info.

So an auto inductee is not voted on by the community, but chosen by the hall members?

yes in the case of interantional players and sarah they were.

The reason for the international players was simply because no one knows anything about the interantional community by in large. They were being ignored by all of us. Xavier Prein was chosen last year because he is the two time French Champ, He is ranked 3rd in the world in DCI and does a ton of work within the French community. Whether it be helping grow the game thru local stuff or by contributing to the French minis website community. Basically he is very active. Now how many folks from here, Bloomilk or Wizards know that about him. I would say maybe 5% of the people. At some point we have to look at the global community. Right now we are trying to work with the Euopean community to get a European SWM championship going (much like Gencon is the North American Championship).

For intents and purposes think of it like the Football Hall of Fame. They have a committee that adds in older players that might have been missed and broadcasters. These folks are deserving but at some point they did not go thru the normal voting process. The Baseball Hall of Fame has one too.

I'm confused by the post about Jedicartographer, then. It says he was auto inducted.

that was the initial community vote. It was different than the normal procedure and somewhere prior to the hack that destroyed every post I had something like 3500 of them I think I used that term meaning it was different than the rest. Probably not the best choice of words on my part. There had to be a starting point and JC/Matt was part of that. He was the original community in vote.

Of course it was a different world minis wise when that was done just to date it a bit. There was no BLoomilk and Sw Shoebox was still being used. Which nowadays I dont many folks can picture the world without building squads on bloomilk.

Kind of a silly comment, but shouldn't there be a sticky message here that just lists who the Hall of Fame members are?

It sorely needs to be updated. At a minimum, the class of 2010 should be listed by now.

I'll take the blame for that. I'll get on it ASAP.
