Because one player could snipe a piece and now you have to get to the other side to do anything.

Your idea only encourages turtleing.

Of course, we could adopt the Mechwarrior style-

each player scores points for having a unit in thier opponents DEPLOYMENT zone. This would force you to fight your way across the board.
