The glossary definition says "can avoid" so I am assuming it's optional, is that correct?. Normally I would always want to save, but in this case I want a piece to die to activate Unleash the Force.

No you have to roll the save. in minis you have to roll saves unless there is something that is optional that i dont know about.

Parry is optional due to the added lines-

Glossary Text:

When this character is hit by a Melee Attack, it can avoid the damage with a save of 11. You must decide whether to use this special ability immediately after the attack hits.

Evade does not contain this, so Evade is not optional.

No, Parry and Evade are NOT optional. There's been jokes around the WOTC forums that the word "can" doesn't mean "maybe". I believe the use of the word "can" is more like this: The figure might avoid the damage if he rolls higher than an 11. Replace "might" with "can" in that sentence and you get roughly the same meaning.

It is for this reason that it is also considered cheating if you don't remind your opponent to roll their Parry/Evade saves when appropriate.

EDIT: Beat by several others, lol. And I even type fast!

Interesting...I had forgot about that wording. Are we sure that the entire ability is optional? I would assume that wording is meant more to be like the text inserted in the Djem So abilities that say you have to decide whether to use Riposte or not before doing Djem So. Weird. I didn't remember those extra words in there.

I saw this from Nickname

NickName wrote:
Generally such abilities are not optional. However, Parry specifically tells you you can choose as you quoted, so you can.

The speculation is that the designers copied the wording for Lightsaber Block and forgot to remove the wording that typically applies to Force powers.

Sounds like another mistake not corrected. Nice! :P

In SWM, I usually see "can" as "has the ability to" rather than "may or may not."
