Here's my squad report (copy/pasted, so same as on WOTC). Dennis, Jason, and the Owensboro team did an amazing job yesterday!
My squad for the day was:
GOWK
Dash, RS
Lobot
JWM
R2-Astromech
Caamasi
My map choice for the day was Bespin. I like Ruined Base for this squad as well, as both give nice options with the double door control. Bespin is fun too though because of the pit areas and GOWK’s Force Push...as you’ll see later in my report...
First game of the day was against Michael, from the Carbondale group. He was a younger guy, but played a great game, and we had a lot of fun talking about the game afterwards. He was playing Mandalorians with 2 Scouts, 2 Gunslingers, TBSV, Quartermaster, Captain, Caamasi, Mouse Droids, and an Ugo or two. We played on my map, and I started out on the platform, and he started in the hallway. He advanced his two scouts, and one of his gunslingers into the cover squares in the middle of the hallway on the first round, and I took the opportunity to have Dash shoot at the Gunslinger at the end of the round, landing a hit and then a critical, and he failed both Evades giving me an early lead. Second round was mostly advancement, and the 3rd round was when I really pressed the attack. I towed up the JWM and Assualted one of the Scouts, then ran GOWK 12 with 2 FPs to kill that Scout. I lost the next init, and the remaining Gunslinger unloaded on GOWK, landing no damage, thanks to my 26 in cover, and some decent SSM saves. I then finished off the other Scout with another Assault and attack from GOWK. I then lost init AGAIN, and the Gunslinger tried to pound GOWK, only landing 20 damage total out of the 4 shots. GOWK then pushed the Gunslinger (killing the Mouse Droid who was also nearby), and then I towed Dash up at the end of the round to finish off the Gunslinger. My JWM meanwhile used his last FP to Assault and kill the TBSV, though I did eventually lose the JWM to the onslaught of the Quartermaster and Captain. Dash made quick work of the Quartermaster though, and a towed GOWK finished off the Captain. Lobo 1-0
Second round was against Graham, from the Atlanta group. He was playing Xizor, 3 TBSVs, Ozzel, IG Tarkin, Mas, Czerka, a Mouse Droid, and 3 Ugos. We played on my map again, with me set up on the platform again. I used my double Override to help me gain first round gambit, and keep him slightly at bay. He made a placement error in the 2nd round and put his Mouse Droid in the only square that any of his Ugos could reach in order for him to start shooting at me (door was locked, and Ugos would then have to move 7 or more to reach the door, so no Satchel Charge). So I got some relative safety for Round 2. Round 3, things got ugly, lol. I used his single activation against him a little bit, and activated most of my fodder early on. He had a few pieces grouped oddly, and I finally unlocked the door in order for our forces to engage, but I used my two free Mouse Droids (had brought a Human BG, 2 MDs, and an Ugo for Reinforcements) to block the door, and force him to kill both of those before he could shoot at any of my pieces (was trying to avoid the quad Jolt/Opportunist, lol). I then took a bit of a risk, and tow cabled GOWK into the fray, using 3 FPs to do Force Push, hitting Xizor, the Czerka, and one of the TBSVs. Xizor had already activated, and I managed to push him out into the center hallway, leaving him wide open. Dash unloaded on him, leaving him with 20 HP at the end of the round (missed the last shot on him
). With the Push, I had also moved the one TBSV closer to my JWM, and so then he ended up with two unactivated TBSVs within 6 of my JWM. He was only able to save one (here’s where Ozzel hurt him), and my JWM Assaulted and killed the other one. He took an AoO with his last TBSV to get to and kill R2, but since we were in the skinny hallways on the top half of Bespin, he ended up leaving his two remaining TBSVs side by side. I won init and my JWM did a Sweep to finish off the TBSVs, and then GOWK made his Pheromone save and finished off Xizor. At that point, Graham conceded. Lobo 2-0
Third game was against a squad that I was frankly surprised had done that well already. But from what I heard about his first two rounds, he played them well, and the dice were not kind to his opponents, lol. His squad was Exar Kun, 2 Bomas, a Kel Dor BH, and 3 Ugos. We played on my Bespin map again, and this time, I started on the inside, and he started in the rooms above the platform. We both slowly advanced in the first round, me gaining gambit by going straight down the hallway. In the 2nd round, he was doing mostly positioning, but he left 2 of his Ugos where my Dash could get to them, racking up 2 kills for me. The next round, I forced one of his Bomas to have to base and attack one of my free Mouse Droids (went HBG, 2 MDs, 1 Ugo again for Reinforcements), and then my JWM Assaulted, and GOWK hit the Boma, reducing it to 40 HP. He decided at this point, to use Kun’s Transfer, and hit the JWM for 60. Dash used Tow cable though, and finished off the Kel Dor, and the last Ugo, and R2 used Override to lock closed the door between Kun and the JWM. Then my Caamasi created a roadblock for the 2nd Boma. Yay Diplomat.
I won init, and used Tow Cable to get Dash out of Kun’s range, and then when he used Sith Sorcery on his next turn, I managed to make all my saves anyway. Dash and the Human BG concentrated fire on the Boma (putting Kun behind a wall, out of LOS), and when I won init the following round, Dash finished off the Boma. At this point, he was down to just Kun, and I hadn’t lost anything worth points. In addition, I still had double-Override, and he was outside on the platform. I could’ve locked him out for the win, but he didn’t want to conceded, and wanted to just keep rolling inits, locking doors, and tracking gambit, lol. I decided to play it out, and just played door games with him. He ended up killing my Caamasi and Human BG (got trapped outside the door, lol), but otherwise, I would let him activate Kun, then I’d tow cable Dash, open the door, unload on Kun, then lock the door with Lobot. Rinse, repeat, till Kun was dead. Lobo 3-0
Fourth game was actually probably the toughest game all day. Was playing against Daniel from the Atlanta group, running the NR squad he took 3rd place with down there. His only loss in the Atl Regional with that squad was to James who ended up winning the whole event. So, his squad was Kyle JBM, Kyp, Wedge, TBSV, Dodonna, Luke FS, Mouse Droid, and a couple Ugos. We played on his Ruined Base map, and I took the outside. We both got 1st round gambit, as he burned one of his FPs to put Kyle up close and personal. I knew a key for me to win would be to take down the TBSV and reduce Kyle’s damage output. I had to sacrifice R2 to do it (darn failed Grenades 40, lol), but I tow cabled up the JWM, and then ran him 8 to put 20 on the TBSV. I won the following init and finished off the TBSV. Meanwhile, GOWK and Dash advanced to start hitting whatever they could. I won the following init, and the TBSV died. Things got a tad ugly at this point. Kyp tried to wail on GOWK some, and I returned the favor, though due to Kyle’s Disruptive, Dash managed to miss shots such that Kyp had 10 HP left at the end of the round still. I luckily won the init, and finished off Kyp. I don’t remember the blow-by-blow, but it ended up that Dash was down to 10 HP, and Wedge missed a shot on him by 1 (rolled a 10, and I had cover). Kyle and Kyp got GOWK down to 60 through a series of attacks and Lightning hits. I used GOWK to kill his last Ugo, and retreated Dash and GOWK behind the center door, using Lobot to lock them in. Meanwhile, the JWM tried to hunt down Wedge. When I finally landed the killing blow on him, he rolled both his Avoid Defeat saves, lol, and then Kyle finished off the JWM. I was still ahead on points, but just barely. He started advancing Kyle, Dodonna, and Wedge towards the center doors, and with only 1 Override piece left, I knew I couldn’t permanently lock him out. So I played some games with him. Waited till he activated Kyle, and left him adjacent to the door. Then I let the Override expire, Dash shot at him, not landing much damage due to Evade, and then GOWK used Push 3 to move him away from the door, letting it close. Eventually, he won an init, and ran Kyle 11 squares, taking an AoO from GOWK, and basing my Dash, hoping for the best (he didn’t have much option at this point). But I got lucky enough with enough hits from Dash (he hadn’t activated yet that round), and I got Kyle down to 10 HP. GOWK was in range, and had enough FPs left, I just did FP again, killing Kyle, and securing the win for me. Lobo 4-0...and onto the final game!
Final game against Carl, aka Luke_Skywalker on the forums here. He was playing GOWK as well, but with Rex, Dash, R2, Caamasi, Wicket, and 4 Ugos. We played on my Bespin map again, and I started on the platform side. We both advanced in the first round, with me opening the door on the center room in order to run GOWK around inside for the first round gambit points. 2nd round, Carl made a gutsy move that I still give him a ton of credit for attempting, and at the time, seemed really brilliant. He tow cabled his GOWK through the center room, and out far enough to use Push 3 and hit my R2, Dash, JWM, and Human BG. Ouch! I retaliated by having Dash kill his R2, and then hit GOWK twice, causing him to burn his last FP to re-roll SSM, which would be his undoing. I had already noticed that I could use my own Force Push 3 on his GOWK, but it was at this point that I noticed he had no FPs left, and he was only 2 squares away from the pits! Of course, I mentally prepared myself for the fact that he would likely make the pit save, and was already formulating what else I would do. I’d move up the JWM to assault GOWK, and then my GOWK would be able to play interference against his Dash/Rex. So I use the 3 FPs, hit his GOWK for 30, move him 2 squares...he rolls the pit save...
5!
No FPs left to re-roll!! I couldn’t believe it. Of all ways to seal the win for the final game. At that point, it was more or less clean-up duty. My JWM rushed in to get near his Rex and Dash at the end of the round. I ended up losing the JWM after he Assaulted Dash, but my Dash landed enough hits, and his failed enough evades that Dash went down. GOWK chased down Rex, and he died shortly thereafter, finishing the game. Lobo 5-0!!
This was an absolutely incredible event, and that had nothing to do with the fact that I won. Dennis and Jason and the Owensboro crew did a tremendous job of putting the event together, and made every one of us feel totally welcome. We had an awesome mix of players of all skill levels, and everybody seemed to have a great amount of fun the whole day. I was also blessed enough to win a raffle for a Clone Wars Battle Pack, which was cool because I’ve been hoping to pick up a 2nd Lancer Droid and Clone Speeder Bike at some point, but it was great because I was able to help out quite a few of the younger guys by just giving away the rest of the stuff in the pack, including the maps and the other Rares. Was just an awesome time.
So kudos again to all the guys involved in planning it, you did a wonderful job! Hopefully you’ll get to host a regional again next year, and hopefully we’ll get more Regionals overall so there won’t have to be any fussing at all as to whether you guys deserved one or not. You pulled it off well, and had a great turnout, so I think that was answer enough. Besides, the venue was enormous, and an incredibly great place to hold an event of this size. We could’ve easily fit another 10-12 people in there probably. If anybody’s in the Owensboro area, you should just stop by and check out the Coollector’s Mall store, as it’s huge, and has just about anything a comic/action figure/video game/etc. collector could possibly be interested in. Awesome venue.
And it was great to meet in person some of the people from Carbondale and Atlanta! Hope to see some (or all!) of you at GenCon!!
