Revenge of the Sith Set Review (out of 5 LS)
Image ImageImage ImageImage

Revenge of the Sith is the only set released to key in on one specific movie. It follows the transformation of Anakin Skywalker to the evil Darth Vader and the crumbling of the once mighty Republic to the transmutation of the Iron Fist Empire. Parallels of the set can be seen in the movie as we see the Clones gain the “Order 66” Special Ability which, when coupled with the Emperor on the enemies squad, become ineffective in combat. We also see a fraction of the Empire pieces which is consistent with the small amount of time that the Empire takes shape in the movie. Various versions of General Grievous, the evil leader of the Seperatist forces are represented, keying on his various roles played in the movie and with a hint at a cameo, we see Boba Fett, Young Mercenary. Unfortunately for the collector and Gamer, the majority of the Republic and Seperatist pieces are of course reprints or different versions found in the Clone Strike set. With a small script to draw from (only one movie) it is extremely challenging for the game makers to produce enough pieces with enough diversity. Different versions of Jedi represent their onscreen performances and although Order 66 and betrayal fit will with Palpatine, it would have been interesting to see a more risky ability or effect when Jedi are paired with Clone Troopers...

Breakdown by Faction / Top Pieces by Faction

Republic

The Republic Faction in Revenge of the Sith is slightly different from the Clone Strike Republicans. They are a still a faction consisting of Clones and Jedi but Order 66 is a major hindrance (only against Emperor Palpatine, Sith Lord). We also see the Republic draw in characters from the other systems that are assisting them such as the Wookiees of Kashyyyk as well as the Bail Organa from Alderaan with his Alderaan Troopers and his loyal Captain (Antilles). Unfortunately, game play wise a lot of the Jedi don’t pan out competitively. Although Anakin is a decent piece, just like every piece with a mid 20 point cost, he will be overrun by the deadly Jedi Weapon Master in Champions of the Force. It is fun sometimes though to run Anakin, Obi-Wan and the likes but Obi-Wan relies on being put together with Anakin to take advantage of his Commander Effect. Yoda and Mace also get reprints in this sets (Jedi Master Versions) but like Agen Kolar, they just don’t match up to the Clone Strike versions either lacking Special Abilities (Whirlwind Attack) or Force Powers (Renewal for Yoda). Mon Mothma and R2-D2 Astromech Droid do find their way into the Meta though with some game-breaking abilities but all in all the Republic is significantly on the way out as evidenced in the movie

Key Pieces: R2-D2, Astromech Droid (Very Rare), Obi-Wan Kenobi, Jedi Master (Rare; Starter only), Mon Mothma (Very Rare)

Seperatists

The Seperatists get a final ditch effort to challenge the Republic and are well setup in this Set to do so. With the leadership of General Grievous, Supreme Commander they Droids get a significant boost from Grievous. San Hill and Wat Tambor both give the Faction different boosts as leaders. Darth Tyranus has lost a step since the last set, but Dark Side Inspiration is a significant ability to make up for this lower attack and defense. Unfortunately all three versions of Grievous never really live up to this on-screen performance. Supreme Commander is a significant piece but both the Wheelbike and Jedi Hunter just don’t live up to his on-screen deadliness. The biggest most significant boost that Seperatists get is the 20-point Bodyguard Droid as well as the 10-point San Hill – who’s Commander Effect will be done twice over at least up until the end of Legacy.

Key Pieces: San Hill (Rare), Bodyguard Droid (Uncommon), General Grievous, Supreme Commander (Rare; Starter Only)

Fringe

Although the Fringe faction still isn’t where it was in terms of a stand alone faction, it still packs quite a punch in this set and adds some key pieces to the now 4 other factions available. The Chagrian Mercenary Commander will be key in some Luke Skywalker squads after Alliance & Empire comes out and the Iktotchi Tech Specialist gives access to some door games to the various factions lacking true Door Control. The worst piece possible Yuzzem is bountiful unfortunately, but we do see a Boba Fett, Young Mercenary hinting perhaps at an on-screen cameo. Tion Medon and his Utapauns take a neutral stance in this set perhaps two intriguing pieces, Sly Moore (Dominate) and the Medical Droid (Emergency Life Support) both are found in the Fringe in this set. Tack on to that the wildcard Gotal Fringer (9-point Disintegration) and you have some excellent support for every Faction.

Key Pieces: Chagrian Mercenary Commander (Uncommon), Iktotchi Tech Specialist (Uncommon), Sly Moore (Rare)

Empire

The Empire gets a miniscule boost in this set from mainly some Melee characters and a cool re-pose of the neat but quite useless Royal Guards. The Dark Side Adept is one of the first botched cards (lacking both Force Points and Lightsaber +10) but is a neat piece for only 16 points which does 10 damage ranged, and 20 up close. Anakin takes the plunge to the Dark Side of the Force and Sith Apprentice is perhaps what one would like to see in a comparable Light Side version for the Republic. Darth Vader is also an excellent piece for 47 points up to this point and Emperor Palpatine, Sith Lord has a big back of tricks including Lightsaber Assault and Sith Lightning. Having him out there makes you think twice before flooring all Clones – any character with Order 66 cannot attack him. Palpatine also makes you think twice if you have Lightsaber Riposte – roll a 1 and you’re joining his side.

Key Pieces: Emperor Palpatine, Sith Lord (Very Rare), Darth Vader (Very Rare), Anakin Skywalker, Sith Apprentice (Very Rare)
