Alright, so while i was gazing aimlessly at all the bagged figures from IE that i would never possibly use...like the Rebel Trooper, and Stormtrooper, a brilliant idea struck me. Why not repaint some Rebels and Imps and create a chess game using these figures!

So, i'm putting this plan into action. So far, here's what I've come up with in terms of what pieces should represent a certain chess piece:

Rebels (Gold)
---
8 Pawns = 8 Rebel Troopers (IE?)
2 Rooks = 2 (Hoth/Normal/Commando?) Rebel Officers (?)
2 Knights = 2 Wookies (TFU?)
2 Bishops = 2 (Elite?) Hoth Troopers (TFU?)
1 Queen = Luke Skywalker (?)
1 King = Leia (?)

Imperials (Silver)
---
8 Pawns = 8 Stormtroopers (IE?)
2 Rooks = 2 (Storm/Snow/Sand/Normal?) Imperial Officers (?)
2 Knights = (Whipid Trackers?)
2 Bishops = 2 Snow Troopers (TFU?)
1 Queen = Vader (KOTOR?)
1 King = Palpatine (?)

So those are my current blueprints. Note that a pair of parentthesis with a "?" inside it signifies i'm not sure what to do yet. For example, the "(?)" next to the Stormies and Rebel Troopers means that I'm planning to use the IE versions, but aren't sure (another candidate for the stormtroopers are the TFU marshmellow ones, but those are harder to find).

Here's a few setbacks:
1) Some of the characters I don't know how to get. for example, how in the world am i going to get a cheap Imperial Palpy? Maybe a D&D figure or something that i can repaint. Thoughts?

2) The "Queen and King" thing. Notice how Luke is the Queen and Leia is the King. It's confusing, but i thought it made more sense since Luke is a jedi and leia is, well, a princess to say the least. In the game of chess the queen is the strongest piece you have and the king is who you're supposed to "protect". so it made most snese to me this way. Again, please let me know if you think something should be changed.

3) I don't know what version to use of each piece that has multiple reprints. Example: I'm definitely not going to repaint a Luke JM figure over a Luke Jedi figure. So somewhere I have to find balance between a cool sculpt/cost of figure.

4) I have no clue who to use for the Imperial Knights (haha, there was a pun there :P ). So far i've put Whipid trackers as them, but i don't think that belongs. Thoughts?

In addition, if you have any of the mentioned pieces above and maybe they're possibly orphaned figs and you want to find a good home for them, they'll be given a great one here ;) :) :D . I can even trade, though I don't really want to give much for them either since I'll just be repainting them anyways.

Help! Thoughts/comments appreciated :)

What about using the Royal Guards as imperial knights/bishops?

This makes much more sense. Royal Guards even almost look like chess bishops.

Not only that, the King and Queen I would assume are also married, and well.... yuck.

Why do you need to repaint the pieces? I'm sure it'd work just fine without repainting, that way you can just use a regular Rebel Storm Emperor Palpatine as a King?

Maybe Dark Troopers for Knights (with the whole jumping thing going for them)

I did something similar once, except CW era
Pawns - Clone Troopers / Battle Droids
Rooks - Star Corps Troopers / Super Battle Droids
Knights - Wookiees / Magnaguards
Bishops - Anakin / Obi-Wan / General Grievous / Asajj Ventress
Queen - Mace Windu / Count Dooku
King - Yoda / Darth Sidious

Actually, they do, as do targetting rules. Makes using your knights a pain the arse!

lol :P . @ dnemiller: that's a pretty sweet idea, i never thtought of that. I was planning though on using a CS type sidious wihtout him holding a blade to represent him being the "king", i.e.: he's not moving around and attacking everyone as the queen would do.

That's a great idea ; except i'll be painting them solid silver so it'll be confusing (they'll look like normal stomries with a weird "backpack" on them). Maybe a unique looking trooper?

Well, it wouldn't really make sense to put Han Solo as the queen...i mean, SW (at least the 1st three episodes that came out originally) is totally based around Luke! He HAS to be in the rebel army. :D and mara jade is kinda a "no-name" character to those who don't know SW EU...i'm planning to make this chess set playable and recognizable for all people.

Awesome idea. I'll definitely use that idea. Maybe i should swap the Rebel bishops for Honor Guards? and maybe put the captains (both sides) as Knights?

Thanks for the comments! Keep 'em coming! :D

a brilliant idea struck me. Why not make the knights for both sides be 'famous' shooters? So rebels would have han and chewie as knights and imps would have boba and some other BH....

That's a good idea. And if not, you could go literal with Imperial Knights

I like the idea of Probe Droids for the Rooks/Castles, but only if the spaces on your board are big enough for a Large piece.

If Creme wants to move into having squares that cater for large minis, then Sandtroopers on Dewbacks and Rebel troopers on Tauntauns are almost a must for the Knights. And then we are given the option for Rebels with Atgar cannons for Rooks, E-Web blasters and such.
