This may sound like a newbie question, but my son posed it last night and I agreed with his reasoning. He was playing Luke's SnowSpeeeder. The base on the figure covers less squares on the map than the actual piece. Now, when determining distance, range, melee, etc, do I use the base as the determining factor or do I use the actual piece itself, which is bigger than the base?

Well, an easy answer. You always use the base of the figure.

Huges are 3x3, and occupy 9 squares, even if some (I'm looking at you TIE Crawler) over extend their base.
