On Facebook, on the GenCon thread, someone named Tom Cadorette has challenged me to meet him at the Ram during the convention and explain to him why WotC is a losing business in the industry.

LOL that's funny Dennis. I had trouble figuring out exactly what you were talking about though, so here's a link for anybody who wants to see it.

Just guard your IQ carefully. After reading his posts, I fear it may drop substantially after having this "discussion" with him.

Don't turn your back on him if you take him up on the beer. He might slip you a roofie. Next thing you know you'll be in a pit somewhere applying lotion to the skin, or getting the hose again.

No, even worse: he'll undress you...and dress you up in shirts proclaiming your love and life for WotC

More and more I find WotC is WizKids in slow motion.

Both created a particular sector in the game market.

Both bought an existing RPG company.

Both companies, while independent were innovative and willing to try out new games to see if they'd take off, though most didn't.

Both eventually got bought themselves.

Both stopped innovating shortly after being bought.

Both gradually squeezed their budget tighter and tighter until they were dropping product lines that did well for themselves, but didn't return a big enough profit margin.

Both dropped licensed properties that should have been an easy market for them because the licenses were too expensive.

WizKids eventually worked their way down to selling 3 product lines and two board games before their parent company decided that there was no way to squeeze the company any harder to improve the profit margin.

WizKids closed under Topps, divided up, and parts of what WizKids were been was sold off to NECA, who relaunched the WizKids label and its most popular product line.

Wizards is down to 5 product lines, with two or more of those lines possibly on life support. In the past few years they killed the two miniatures games they were best known for.

My expectation will be that WotC will shave off two or more lines over the next year. After that, barring a miracle, Hasbro will effectively shut them down, sell off portions, license others, and use the WotC name as a label for in-house product, the way they do with Avalon Hill and such.

And really, it's not a slight against WotC. It's just the situation they're in.

By 2013 look for D&D 5th ed from Paizo. Magic will still be Hasbro, but in house. The rest will probably be gone.

Just some guy I guess, with insightful comments like this...

Quote:
Well, Wizards didn't drop Star Wars so much as Lucasfilm dropped Wizards by not renewing the license. I think WotC had pretty much reached the end of what it could do with the property anyway, and for the most part, did it pretty damn well.

It's impressive how this both contradicts what WotC has said (that they dropped the license as too expensive), and goes along with WotC's claim that there was 'nothing left to do' in the SW universe. Uhm.... yeaaaaaahhhh....

I especially like where he says WotC "did it pretty damn well." Are we talking about the same game here? I mean, the rules are amazing and there are a lot of great pieces, but when you look at the big picture, WotC didn't just drop the ball, they kicked it down the court and fumbled with it every time they tried to pick it up again.

aww guys give the guy a break. We have people in this community who are still drinking the WOTC kool-aid and hate this site because it is not WOTC. So why shouldn't a magic or D&D player be drinking that same kool-aid.

If I posted on Wizards would anyone even notice?

Ah, nice. Id heard the quote before, but didnt have a name to put it with.

Smack him around, Dennis....verbally, of course...

I could definitely agree with eMouse's picture of the future of wotc. Hopefully they dont do anything else to Dnd to make Mr. Gygax roll in his grave.
