Seems pretty clear just from a read-through.

For the 'experts' out there, the bit about creating the folder "SWMinis_8-1_ext" shouldn't be necessary. Everything in that folder could be moved up one level into the "Vassal" folder without breaking anything, or the folder could be given a less obscure name maybe "Star Wars Minis" or something. So people can experiment with that if they want.

Otherwise, nice job.

I know what you mean but for some reason in the past few months when ever I have had someone drop that folder some goes boink and it doesnt work.

I have probably helped 20 people in the last 4 months via skype or telephone set this up.

So I just just did the steps in the way that no one has ever had trouble.

It worked so well in fact Jim/Moses actually finally has vassal loaded correctly.

Well it worked. Now watch out, if I don't go blind trying to see what the hell is going on my little laptop screen I might be dangerous.

Thanks a million Dean.

For whatever reason the map files do not show up when I load Vassal. It this common, or should they show up when I boot up?

Just to be sure I have this straight... I tend to avoid folder names tied to version numbers as I don't plan to keep multiple (older) modules "installed".

If my MOD file is named SWMinis.mod, then I can either put the extracted maps files in the same folder with the MOD, or a subfolder named SWminis_ext? Or does any folder name work so long as it is one level below the folder with the MOD?

REALLY simple if they all can just go in the main Vassal folder :D

p.s. -
Dean, your tutorial is very thorough. Nice job, and thanks!

in a subfolder called SWminis_ext.

I believe the name is important, but I'm not too sure.

Only as long as your main .mod file matches the folder name.

Example:

Mod file: swminis
Foldder: swminis_Ext

Mod File: bobobiba
Folder: bobobiba_Ext

Thanks guys!

Yeah, that is how I thought it needed to be. Unless I misread Nickname's comment, he seemed to imply that the map files could be placed directly in the Vassal folder (along with the MOD). No matter, as long as it works!
Now, to find the time to learn my way around the blasted thing :P

Nope. My comment stated (not implied  ) that the folder that contains the MOD file (not the subfolder that contains the MDX map extensions) could have a less obscure name, or any name really, and that is true.

Dean got it all right regarding the extensions subfolder.

Seems to have worked on my laptop (on Windows 7 to top it off as well). Now, I just need a mouse to make it a bit easier.

Thanks Dean for the easy to follow instructions. I have tried to follow some of the other guides but have never gotten Vassal to load correctly. I think I am finally ready to play my first game on Vassal. Now if I can just find someone to play an easy practice game so I can learn the controls.

Is there a best time and day to find people online to play?

evening is usually a good time.. depending on your time zone of course! You can always mosey over to the vassal forum and post availability to set up a game with someone perhaps.
