WOTC CONSPIRICY, yes. Listen here,
We have been getting "Leaks" on sets for a while now. Seemingly coincidental, but what if it isn’t… I’m sure WOTC knows the profitable value of Leaking Information. Letting leaks out would make a lot of people jump for joy, and be even more excited. The possible result of 90% ordering more cases and the anticipation-build up, perhaps them showing others-getting them siked too. Now just think about it, they leak info, get people excited, and they order more. I’m not saying I mind, but it’s a rather clever marketing ploy.

It works with M:TG. Why not SWM?

I supppose. In my mind though, there's a difference between 'leaks' and 'advertising', which is really all we've got so far for the LOTF set. Sending out the poster a month or two before hand is pretty typical.

That's the way I always heard it should be.

There have been what can be called 'leaks' in the past, but this is just the Official poster set out to Official retailers. Nothing out of order really.

WOTC are a pretty private comapany and always seem to have their own agenda and refuse to comment about it to anyone. I swear if you asked them if they make Star Wars Miniatures they'd refuse to answer 8)

Or the possible result of 90% ordering less cases. A&E was leaked farthest in advance and by all accounts was one of the worse selling sets. Can you link the fact that people were already bored with the stats by the time it was released to the weak sales? Who knows. I tend to think not, and same with any hype generated very early for a popular product. Marketing seems to work best when the excitement and availability coincide.

Aside from the fact nothing has leaked about this set yet, I just don't think there's a mindset at WotC even capable pulling a conspiracy off in general.

I don't think theres a "conspiracy" really.

The fact that we know all the new peices coming out 6-8 weeks in advance doesn't really give anything away.

And honestly, I think its very easy to forget that this "online wolf pack" is just a tiny fraction of the people that play the game anyway, so I don't think much is really getting leaked to alot of people.

And I don't have actual percentages of who plays, and who blogs about it, but I know that I'm the only one that I know personaly that is part of any online community.

There's a distinction between "leak" and "controlled release."

The "leak" concept means someone got the information without WotC's direct involvement. As has been demonstrated repeatedly in Magic, WotC people HATE that. Some of them, at least, HATE that the full spoiler for Magic sets are available on other websites while they're still compiling the information to release themselves.

The release of the set posters for LotF does not constitute a "leak," so it's okay.

The accidental sale of A&E in Europe while Rob is in the middle of Bothan Transmission puzzles on the WotC message boards is a leak of the worst kind in WotC's eyes.

It wasn't too long ago that someone leaked information about an upcoming Magic set and it got posted. The persons responsible faced legal repercussions.

The CONSPIRICY was more or less a joke. You guys really need to LIGHTEN UP, but I'm just pointing the fact. Like I have said, I love leaks. Gets me going and waiting impatiently for the set.

I was considering getting out as I am unable to play as much as I used too (As in I never get to play anymore.)

The "leak", "conspiracy", whatever has got me excited for the new set. I guess I will be finishing up my TFU set after all.

I didn't start using the boards until right before A&E came out. All I remember is the wizo boards had severe punishments for anyone posting spoiler info and you basically went to other sites to get the goodies. It seems to be way more lax the last couple of sets on their message boards. I don't know how much of that has to do with the new Wizo's or just the fact that this really can't be considered leaked cause they are the ones who mailed out the poster.

Yeah, Boba, the problem is, WotC is competing with other gaming companies. They really don't want their info to be available any earlier than they say so, because then it gives the other gaming companies a head start on seeing WotC's latest product and trying to come up with ways to out-do it. So, releasing a poster 2 months early is no big deal at all. In fact, I think the posters for A&E came out right around the same time as the big leak in Spain. But the stats leaking out was the big problem.

With any of the other sets that have come out since I've been on the forums (right around the time of Champions) the Wizo's have been fairly relaxed because anything that 'leaked' (i.e. wasn't released through previews or on the poster) was just one or two pieces here or there, and typically only a week or two before the set release anyways.

I see, so what you are telling me is that A&E was kind of a cluster because of what happened with the Spain Ebay deal and that what we are seeing with TFU and LOTF is pretty normal. I can see that. I mean there has to be ALOT of people that really know a ton about LOTF right now between marketing and production people, as with every set. I would say that is pretty common in the gaming industry. I think "leaking" a set list or poster is a great thing for the product, where as the stats methinks would be a lot different.

Yup, what we have right now is pretty much exactly the same as what we saw for TFU, Bounty Hunters, and Champions of the Force. I have no experience prior to those, but from what I've heard, I believe they were similar as well.

I think you have to take the external situations into account.

When Clone Strike came out, the set was posted weeks in advance. Nary a word was said.

When RotS came out, LFL didn't want ANY info about the movie hitting the streets until April 5, the day all their stuff released (I remember the date because I still have the case boxes that are labeled "Do not ship until April 5; I kept them as a reminder of how ridiculously secretive LFL can be).

When Universe came out, nothing LFL related was happening, so again, full-on early spoilage by the fans.

Then CotF came out, and same thing as Universe. Clustering was the main complaint (or praise, depending on how many clustered duplicates you pulled).

With Bounty Hunters, they had a showcase at GenCon, so they controlled the spoilage, so no worries.

A&E was another "Super-secret" LFL issue, as they wanted to perform a "Grandstand play" at Celebration IV.

I don't think there was any real buzz about TFU, so spoilers were irrelevant. I was probably among the most excited for that set, and I have played less since it came out than I did before. A lot of that is work related, but also because after three years I have to admit that the overzealous enthusiasm has begun to fade just slightly.
