Talking with guys at the LGS last night, and we were looking at these artists proofs. We had an idea that I think is quite possible. The picture of the Chiss admiral, might not actually be Thrawn. A couple things to note:

1. Thrawn typically is shown with the gold pauldron things on his shoulders (the pad things with the fringe around them). This sketch does not have those.

2. The facial features don't really seem to match those of Thrawn from other artwork I've seen. This could just be artistic license, or lighting effects, so it might be nothing.

3. There is a Chiss Moff in the Legacy comic: Moff Fehlaaur. We discovered this while flipping through the new 0 1/2 issue of Legacy last night. With there being other stuff based on the Legacy series, it stands to reason that this could be a possibility. You can see some pictures of him on wookieepedia here: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Fehlaaur

4. The image of Moff Fehlaaur in the Legacy 0 1/2 issue very closely resembles the image as drawn in the sketch. The uniform matches almost exactly.

Now, as I said, this could all be speculation, and I find it kind of unlikely that we would get this figure as a Unique, as honestly, I can't even remember when this Moff has actually appeared in the comic. So, it's not like he's a major character or anything. But they made Rav Bralor into a non-Unique Mando. Perhaps this will be a non-Unique Imperial Moff, based on Fehlaaur. Gives the WotC team another figure out of the Legacy timeline, as I'm sure they're probably shooting for the 12-15 characters from that era, similar to what they did with TFU.

Thoughts?

A generic Chiss wouldn't be iconic enough to be put on a box. It is Thrawn.

Who says those are box art? They look like they would work perfectly for card sketches to me.

I agree. With the box art part of the equation I would have to say it is Thrawn. I don't think that means they wouldn't make non-unique Chiss officers, though.

Well, I am just going by a couple of quotes in the email about packaging. Though, of course they could end up being cart art for all we know.

I've been working on an ongoing series of packaging illustrations for the SW's mini's line
Star Wars Sketches for Upcoming SW's Mini's Packaging

Card art doesn't have backgrounds.

At least it hasn't in the past. Doesn't mean it can't. I'm not saying it HAS to be one way or the other. Just pointing out a simple observation that we made last night, while discussing what options there might be if we were getting another Thrawn.

Ugh! The artist has the image titled "Thrawn." Where's the ambiguity?

I would also forward the fact that it is a grand admiral's uniform sans Epaulettes (the gold pauldron shoulder things,) and it is well documented that Thrawn was the only non-human grand admiral.

It says "Thrawn $600" right below the picture. I think no further evidence is necessary. :)

The fact that these are on sale means that WotC likely didn't buy them. I'm not sure what that says about these characters being in a set. I'd guess maybe the artist submitted 10 sketches for the boxes and WotC picked the 3 they liked best to be done as paintings? Also possible these are the "leftovers" from more than one set, making it still likely we'll see these as figures, but less likely we'd see them all in one set.

It's also a well-documented fact that there is a Chiss Moff in the Legacy comic series. It's also a well-documented fact that the LOTF miniatures set is supposed to draw characters from the Legacy comic series. See the connection?

Additionally, I don't think I've ever seen many images with Thrawn without the epaulettes (thanks for reminding me exactly what the right word was!), but the only images of Fehlaaur so far do not have them.

Not all artists know what they're painting. Perhaps they gave her a picture of Fehlaaur and asked her to draw a different pose of the character, but didn't mention who it was. Being a Star Wars artist for some time, but not having read the Legacy series, she assumed it was Thrawn. There's a 1001 assumptions that could be made about the whole thing.. Again, I'm NOT saying it isn't Thrawn, and honestly, I'm 90% sure it probably is Thrawn as well. All I'm doing is point out that there are other possibilities that would fit well with the rest of the theme.

I'm just meerely pointing out a possibility. The least you could do is say "perhaps, but I'm 90% sure it's this other thing" instead of laughing and just dismissing it right away.

The one thing I will concede is that it could be a moff uniform. It is missing the belt around the waist for both grand admiral and moff uniforms, the moff uniform is almost exactly what is pictured, except the uniform seems to be intended to be white, while as we all know moff uniforms are gray. I think the Chiss moff from Legacy is too obscure to make a mini of, however. I'll stick with it being thrawn.

Edit: I found this on wookieepedia, http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Image:Ge ... forhim.jpg

Eh, it's a black-and-white drawing with lighting effects. Could be either white or gray.

The picture that you linked from wookieepedia. Where did that come from originally? Personally, I think the epaulettes look kinda silly, and out of place in the SW universe, so I'm just as happy if it is Thrawn sans epaulettes. :)

EDIT:

Absolutely agree with you here. That's why I wondered whether it might be a non-Unique Chiss instead then. Still probably more likely to be Thrawn than anything though.

I found it attached to an article about Gilad Pellaeon. I had given up trying to find a picture of Thrawn sans epaulettes and decided to see what they had for an article for Pellaeon.

Eh, more interested in what the original source was though, not where it's at on Wookieepedia. Anybody could upload their own fan-produced art, so there's not a full guarantee that that image is from an official source. Though, it looks like something from a comic adaptation of Last Command.

That would be my guess, yes. I know that they did do a Thrawn Trilogy comic adaptation, so I would guess it comes from that.

I just checked Dark Horse's website for their old thrawn trilogy comics, and yes, the art matches that picture, and Thrawn was pictured without epaulettes

If I remember, Thrawn from the comic had a less human like head than what is shown.

Well we will be getting some of these with Knights of the Old Republic. Will we get Thrawn, Emperor Palpatine and Leia as Bouush in Imperial Entanglements.
