Post subject:  D20 preference?

I have noticed that there are two main types of 20 sided dice. The kind that comes with the game that has a 2, 8, and 14 around the 20 and the type that has a 7, 14, and 11 around the 20. Does anyone know if DCI has a ruling on this? When you play, do you have a preference? I don't have any big stat tests or anything, but the 7, 14, and 11 kind sure seems to out perform the the other when it comes to 11 or higher rolls.

I've never noticed a difference. I'll check mine when I get home.

I just know that the total of opposing sides should equal 21, and not be a roll down die.

As far as I know the only rules for D20's are you can't use one of the Magic countdown ones.

I'll have to check my D20's to see which numbers are around the 20.

I noticed the difference, but have not kept track which does better.

I checked mine and 14 out of 15 have the 2, 8, and 14 around the 20.

I'm pretty sure the only DCI rule is that the total of the opposing sides has to be 21.

Though on most of them one of the numbers next to 1 is 19, one of the numbers next to 19 is 3, one of the numbers next to 18 is 4 and so on. Based on this pattern the 2 would logically be next to the 20.

From what I have learned, the opposite sides must equal 21. This is what is called a "truly random die." Then there are ones where the big number are grouped together. In a test, these dice typically roll higher. It doesn't seem like it would, but it has been put through a test.
I had to give up 8 or so d20's because they weren't truly random. The ones that Jim gave us at Gencon followed this rule, and I have followed it for a very long time.

A 20-sided die (d20). Dice must not be especially large or small. Players may not use Spindown™ dice or any dice that have all of the high numbers in a cluster together.

there are basicly 2 major dice companies
Chessex
and 'the other one'...

Chessex are the "official" standard, as they have the patent on the "Random" die matrix
as discussed above

the 'other', well....

However, I bought a dice set at Gencon from Chessex. I had to return the d20, b/c it wasn't totally random! My clear red die is slightly a different shade, b/c it wasn't from a full set.

Wow, I had never heard of the 21 opposite side deal. I have about 10-15 20 sided die I picked up playing Magic the last 10 or so years. I started playing minis around BH and bought most of my stuff online, so until the last starter was the first time I ever had a dice from WOTC. About 3/4 of my dice are of the 7, 11, 14 and the sides don't add up to 21.

They are:
1 and 20
2 and 12
3 and 17
4 and 16
5 and 19
6 and 14
7 and 13
8 and 18
9 and 15
10 and 11

The WOTC one has:
1 and 20
2 and 19
3 and 18
4 and 17
5 and 16
6 and 15
7 and 14
8 and 13
9 and 12
10 and 11

So, I guess there is a difference. I guess I'll have to roll each one 100 times and see what happens. I would definately feel bad if I have been doing something illegal the last couple of years to my friends. I just didn't think it was that important for me to spend time and money tracking down a crappy looking orange WOTC dice.

To make it truely random you have to roll it 10,000 times in a controlled environment. :snowtroop:

Yeah, I don't think I need to know that bad.
