The title says it all.

Is Nym actually playable? I know being a commander hurts him a lot, but is he even slightly useful post-FU?

Is it his overall point cost? Cause I think his basic abilities are quite good.

I think nym's main problems are that he has a horrible ce, low attack, low defense. His abilities like Grenades 40, disruptive, and recon are quite helpful, but he just costs too much. The best you could do with Nym is use him with R2 Doombot or Thrawn. Even Nym's HP could be 10 or 20 higher for his point cost.

I've heard of people use him with Thrawn. He's also pretty decent in a Tile Wars format. But in standard skirmish play, he is a static shooter (has to stay wherever he ends up for the most part) and has a relatively low Defense. His CE makes it so he can't benefit from pretty much anything, so it makes it really tough to boost him up at all.

I think if we get some more decent Mercenary pieces in future sets, he may become useful. They just need to make some Mercs that don't already have Double. Right now his CE is useful on what, one, maybe two pieces?

If they made a decent non-unique Mercenary with Twin Attack, Nym might be useful.

Sometimes you just never know. If they made a decent non-unique Mercenary with, say, Twin and Stealth, suddenly you could see a ton on Nym Bombs squads. I'd call Nym a sleeper piece, waiting for the right support. That may never happen, but at least it's better than being an utterly useless piece that will always be overshadowed (say, Jango Fett CS. What are the odds of a new figure coming out making that a better choice over Jango BH?).

I like the idea of a Merc having twin. Would work great with Nym, stealth is also a great idea. That would definitely make Nym a lot better.

It would be cool to see him lead a sub faction of Mercs in the future sort of like the current Black Sun, but for now......he's useless. Not enough bang for the points.

If nym granted twin attack instead, or if he was a follower, he'd be better. Nym with Kota would be fun, in a perfect world.

He's quite playable with Thrawn and its the only way that the empire can get disruptive.
Tarkin IG gives him a nice boost that you can add more power to his swap but there arn't that many squads around at the moment that can get hampered but a timely disruptive swap although the number of stupid CE synergies at 200 suggests otherwise. He can prevent thrawn getting acosted by exploding grans and uggies though.

Whats given him the biggest set back is the fact that there are now much better static shooters/ranged pieces for similar cost that can be used in the swap with equal effectiveness (Boba Merc, VaderU). You really have to make the grenades and Disruptive work for you in some fashion.

There are some ways to get the most out of his CE, mainly using Lando HoT and Human Mercs, which are still the best Mercs going.

His Drawbacks are numerous though, mainly the +10 Att and 17 D.

I believe he can be playable with Thrawn still, you just need a good squad design and a clever strategy.
Ultimately he'll be used as a Meta choice if ever.

Is Nym playable?

It depends in what you really want out of a piece.
In a Meta competition squad I'd say no. His defense is too low for a Unique, he goes down quickly. But that does not mean he's unplayable. As mentioned already, his CE means he can benefit from Tarkin.

The game is about having fun, and if you have fun playing Nym then that makes him very playable IMHO 8)
