Post subject:  The New Shoebox?

I've been working on my own version of the swshoebox website in my spare time for the last few months, just to hone my web development skills. But now it looks like swshoebox might be dead, so I'm thinking about stepping up my efforts and bringing my web site live.

Honestly, right now all it is is a better (in my opinion) version of the database on the Wizards site. But hopefully it wouldn't take too much effort to finish the squad builder and collection tracker. Is this something worth persuing? Or is Mini Manager enough for people?

I can't show anyone what I have so far, because it's only hosted on my local computer.

My major problem is that I lack web hosting (or the funds to get hosting). I'm using ASP.NET to build the site, and ASP.NET hosting doesn't come cheaply (or free, unfortunately).

Does anyone happen to already have some free space on an ASP.NET compatible host where I could park the site temporarily until it gets on its feet?

The other option is to pay for the web hosting, and try to get some ad support ASAP to cover the cost. Does anyone know how feasible this is? How much can you actually make from ad hosting? I'm not interested in a profit, I just need numbers I can bring to my wife to show her that it's not a bad idea to spend money we don't even have on web hosting. :)

Oh, and I don't want donations right now, because then I'll feel terrible if I don't actually get around to finishing the site.

I'm just trying to get an idea of whether there's any interest in the community, and maybe work up some motivation to keep working on the site.

TBH.. doubt anyone would have ASP.net hosting you could use.. usually only biz's use that due to it's cost.

Hell shoebox is mostly coded in php and Database.

now if you were willing to switch to those i think it'd be safe to say Dean would gladly host it

Yeah, that's what I figured.

The reason I'm using ASP.NET is because it's what I use for work, so I already know it, and I want to keep getting better at it.

As far as if this is worth persuing, I say absolutly!
I honestly haven't used Mini Manager so I can't discuss the differences, but I do use swShoebox and 'am diapointed it's not been updated.
And sadly I can't offer you any advice on web hosting, due to the fact that I am "WeToddDid" when it comes to computers, but if you get to a point when you need a little cash to get it jump started let me know I'd be happy to help.

The only thing I liked about shoebox was on-line squad posting. I prefer collection tracking on my own PC.

Same here, I like Shoebox, but only for the squad building function.

I loved shoebox... MiniManager is clunkier than I like, particularly for printing off my squad sheets (converting to a text file doesn't work terribly well on MM). I'd love to see a new version live :)

I think a new shebox is worth persuing. I think it is mostly used to make squads, not really to track your miniatures.

I'd be willing to chip in as well, to help cover costs.

I think something like this could add to the functionality of our trade forums if you could incorporate it with the SWM Trader utility.

I'd love to see a squad building function here. My worry about hosting, the reason I can't offer, wouldn't be so much the webspace but the bandwidth. Too much traffic and the host could close the site for periods unless a premium bandwidth package is bought.

Dean I think it would be a great idea to host a shoebox on this site. It would be great boost to the community. A forums and a squadbuilder in one would be great! :D

I agree that a shoebox-like page here would be awesome. My college roommate and I used to use it all the time to make squads. He's now an hour away and enjoyed tinkering around on it and sending me links to squad ideas. I would love you forever if you hosted an up-to-date version. :)

I preferred it over minimanager, but since shoebox hasn't updated for TFU, I have switched over to the minimanager. I too would like to see an updated shoebox here or somewhere.

I'm sad to see that Shoebox is rather dead. I liked the online access to my collection and it's platform independence. I'm still very hesitant to use SWmini manager only for some personal dislike of the way it handles it's database design (using the Windows registry).
But all in all I have to give anyone props for spending the time and effort needed to bring something so useful to the community. Shoebox was a beautiful thing and it looks like the developer (John Evans?) either got way to busy or somehow pissed off. I somewhat think the latter due to the lack of response I've received from my repeated emails to him. If anyone wants to try to contact him yourself you can either do a 'whois' lookup or pm me for the info. I'm not posting his info here as I feel that would be in poor taste.

Man that sucks that SB seems to be dead or won't be updated for some time. I also noticed rebel scum hasn't updated their stuff for quite some time as well. Who is pissing these people off?

I should make it clear that I also hope that no negative life changing event has occured in the Shoebox guy's life. Sometimes personal tragedy or issues happen... lets hope that's not the case.

I think a squad builder/SB type tools for this site would be a great addition and I would us it if it is available.
It would draw more people to this site, and help build the SW community.

IF you do a SB like feature here I would like to see a place for stats also. It is nice to see what people think of different minis

The only thing that shoebox was missing was a forum section, though I can imagine the the flaming/nastiness that would take place on an unmoderated message board.
