Post subject:  Alternative to sealed booster tourney

I was thinking of an alternative to two booster 150 sealed event since this set is not quite conducive to the that style. What if you start with two boosters, but also can bring up to 50 points of existing figures. The existing figures do not have to be used and count toward the 150 total. The 50 points must follow faction rules and be revealed before you open the first booster.

What do you think? Further if you were to go to something like this, what 50 points would you take with you?

Edited for clarification.

I don't see why this set isn't conducive to sealed. There are 3 pieces with Reserves/Reinforcements.

It all depends on your luck.

I love the idea, could make for some very interesting semi-sealed games. :D

I agree with adder, this sounds like a fun format.

It was an idea more for fun style than highly competitive. I was thinking for down the road as well - we sometimes buy boosters after the release on game days, and used them, but not as part of a semi-sealed event. We've had some people with horrible tourney pulls and it takes the fun away for them and is a real turn-off for the set. This way, you at least have something to use. You would not have to use the 50 points you bring if you like the pulls you get. The problem with the reserves characters in TFU is if you don't pull grunts that can be brought in according to factions, etc. Kazdan with no droid pulls would be bad for a player in a tourney.

Just wondering what others thought - good and bad.

Love it Bob!

Looks like we'll find out how much fun it really is this coming Saturday at our release tourney!

I prefer booster draft, where one person opens one box, and selects one piece. Then you go around repeat for each person.

Looking forward to finding out how this works for you guys. For the record, I had Wedge and Leia at our proxy sealed event last night and did fine. Granted, I had an AT-ST and a TIE Crawler to back them up. I think this set is diverse enough that most people should be OK. You'd have to have the equivalent of rolling about four 1's in a row to pull bad enough pieces such that you still couldn't do OK. Granted, not impossible, just pretty unlikely.

As the release tourney? Bad idea.
As a fun nite at the store? Sure.. Im good with all kinds of alternate formats (see some other ideas in a recent article for DDM on Wizards)

The concern would be that I wouldnt have enough good pieces to bring and you would bring all kinds of imperial goodness with silly good synergy and just build around that. Sealed evens the playing field - at least as far as the single event goes. New and Old players both have 14 pieces to build from
