I agree with you 100% here, Menoth. We've talked about legalizing at least Ravaged Base and Jedi Temple for 200 point games at our venue. We tend to follow the standard DCI rules pretty well (especially for actual game rules and map choices) but then we do special build themes from week to week (like last night was 'Troopers', no Uniques and no JWMs, week before that was Imperial or Rebel Pure squads). Granted, if somebody comes to visit from out of town and has a problem with playing using our build suggestion, it's totally fine with us.

If DCI doesn't do something about the map situation soon, I think we'll definitely start adding in some of the other options. I would love, at the very least, to add the Yavin Sanctuary (I think it's one of AG7's maps) and JC's new Theed map to our list of 200 point maps. We'll see.

Then those of us interested should make a concerted effort to playtest all of the properly-sized custom maps and start a topic discussing our feelings on the subject. Maybe test 1 map a month with a discussion for each.

The only downside to legalizing custom maps is that any custom map is legal. That's just not fair, someone can design a map to fit their squad and win every time on it, but on other maps they struggle.

I'd say no.

And good job on the 2 pages in less than 7 hours, definitely a hot topic.

I don't think ANYONE wants ALL custom maps made legal across the board. That would be retarded, and would cause the exact problem you describe. Player A just creates whatever they want that best suits their squad and plays with that.

What I'd like to see is WotC take a couple of the fan created maps here and there and declare those individual ones to be tournament legal. Then WotC has control over whether they are playable and look nice enough.

That's an interesting idea.

As a mapmaker (Sith Academy [link found below] :) ) I would naturally be all for it. But of course, I voted for rigid requirements as it would be stupid any other way. I like the idea of WoTC selecting a few maps for us to vote on once a year as someone suggested earlier in the thread. To me, that makes the most since.

I must clarify that I don't think that everytime someone poops out a Microsodt paint map should it be recognized as a tourney legal map, THere has to be rigid requirements for the floowing

Layout/Floorplan

Balance

Playability

The artwork.

Also someone asked where you can find Custom maps, The-holocron and this site have several maps.

As far as custom maps, I do like the idea of Wizards taking and distributing a few each year (then call them fan-produced instead of custom or something). They can print them and sell them retail in a map pack so everyone gets the same printed size and quality. Don't know how the copyright stuff would work for the creator/Wizards, but could be like a freelance article or picture/video in the news. Wizards buys the map designs they like, tweak a bit for game play and produce them in large quantities. That way, they can maintain the same standards they use for their own maps, but we get more than their artists can produce each year.

I'm voting "yes...but" due to some maps being outstanding and some being, well, for fun. I think WotC should find 3-4 good, well-balanced, huge-friendly maps, PAY the creators, and mass produce and distribute them. Then allow them for DCI play, as some custom maps are actually better than some of the current maps, IMO. I don't think this will ever happen, due to the "favoritism" shown to certain maps, with some people who are very proud of their creations getting turned down. "But X map is awesome and I spent X hours creating it. Why isn't my map good enough?? This map that you did choose is worse than mine. *sniff* I'm never buying your products again."

*rolls eyes* Putting myself in WotC shoes, I wouldn't want to deal with a flood of these emails. I wish they would legalize some maps, but i don't see it happening. I like the choosing a few and voting on them idea, though.

I agree with a number of the posts above: let WotC BUY the rights to a few of the fan-made maps and make them DCI-Legal.

AG7's "Yavin IV Sanctuary" and JC's "Theed" are the first two to come to mind immediately. Also, the "Geonosis Sith Hangar" map (I forget who made that one) is excellent. I'm considering ordering them from CafePress once I have the money again (TFU will get in the way for a while, I think).

Especially with all the dissatisfaction about the current map selection (especially at the 200pt level), this is something what WotC would be very wise to consider. Other than the 3 maps I've mentioned above, I can't think of any others that come to mind, which I would like to see made official. There are other good ones (jabba's palace comes to mind), but I think the 3 I already mentioned are the cream of the crop.
