So I plan on getting some of my maps laminated at Gencon. What do I need to do to them to prepare them for lamination? If they need to be flattened, whats the best way to do that? Thanks for the advice! |

When I laminate my maps, I usually just get them laminated, so unless they're ripped, just go ahead and laminate them. |

I agree with Segastorm, Ive never done anything special with any of the maps Ive gotten laminated. If the maps are in particularly bad condition, with rips or tears or whatever, then Ive let the person know about it beforehand, but other than that everything has come out fine. Considering Id imagine your talking about Engineer do the laminating since he has that machine, I would wager he knows what would need to be done, if anything. |

I keep my maps in a large art folder so they are all opened out constantly. It makes them flatter. Whether it helped for the few I have laminated, I don't know. But when I play on the unlaminated maps it is nice that they aren't all uneven and stuff. |

I've always laid heavy books on my maps before laminating them. It helps flattened them and usually means no bubbles in the lamination. |

i never done anything but choose the thickness of laminate I won't and have it done. There are 3 thicknesses that are the norm for the 4-7 dollar range (depending on who you use) you get the really thin laminate. This one allows you to roll the map pretty much like a poster still. The downside is that is can bubble and some cases laminate cracks. It also has a tendency to maintain curls at the edge of map that needs to be weighed down. For the 8-12 dollar range is about double the thickness. This can still be rolled but not tight. The map will lay flat most generally when unrolled. The downside is that it is heavier and takes up more room when traveling. For 14-18 dollars is about double the thickness of the 8-12 range. This makes the map unbendable or unrollable. Almost like having a plastic gameboard. In all cases if a problem comes up with the lamination it is usually fixable. |

All you have to do is spend about 30-45 seconds unfolding the map. No need to unbend the creases. In the next 55-65 seconds it will be laminated. Allow 2 min for complete cooling and it's all done. |

Sounds great! In that case, I'll have a bunch to be laminated at Gencon. Gonna be a big expenditure, but it's worth it. I just counted...I have 13 maps I definitely want laminated, and a few maybes. Pricey! lol |

Now that most of my maps are laminated though, I think I need something a bit bigger around, as they are getting a little tighter than I want towards the center. |

It does a little, but before laying them out, I reroll them against the curve kinda tight, and that generally undoes the curvature enough so that its not a big deal once the minis are placed. Also, whenever I take it home and re-tube it, I try to roll it the opposite way that I had it in there previously, to help keep the curvature from getting too bad from being like that for too long. Not the most ideal, but its a space saver, which is handy in our small-ish apartment. |

store them under the bed/couch/whatever and you can lay them flat. Then you just take whichever ones you need and you are set. |

Sometimes you get a map laminated and it just plain never lays flat. To save you some time, there is no fix for this problem. The tension was not adjusted properly on the laminator and there is less laminate on one side than the other (giving it the convex shape). I've not had this particular problem (but another that I have fixed  )
