Outside the Box Episode VIII: The Tardy Menace.

Corran Horn is a great piece. There's nothing wrong with his stats, abilities or cost that I can see. He just doesn't really fit into competitive New Republic builds very easily. Since Mara is better than him in just about every way for only 6 points more, Corran doesn't really see play. But everytime I've used him, I've been pretty happy with him. I just don't rely on him to be the main damage dealer in the squad, typically.

Corran Horn [39]
HP: 120
Defense: 20
Attack: +13
Damage: 20
----
Unique
Double Attack
Melee Attack
Melee Reach 2
----
Force 3
Absorb Energy
Jedi Mind Trick

The Outside the Box Challenge:
Try to come up with a 100 point squad that could take on Bane and 6 Ugnaughts. A 150 point squad that could take on Black and Blue (LV or JH). And a 200 point squad that could be decent at a tournament. For mine, I'm also trying to make squads that haven't been posted on swshoebox by anyone else yet.

Here are mine:

-100 points vs. Bane & 6 Ugnaughts-
"Horn Wall"
Mara Jade, Jedi [45]
Corran Horn [39]
Garindan [12]
Ugnaught Demolitionist [3]
(99pts. - 4activations)

The idea is to tie up Bane with Corran while Mara shoots (hopefully with Spotter +30). Bane will have to charge Mara eventually. With a lucky initiative, she should be able to take him out. Corran might be able to stun Bane with Jedi Mind Trick (or at least get him to use some Force points).

-150 points vs. Black & Blue-
"NR Commandos"
Corran Horn [39]
Kyle Katarn [31]
Han Solo, Rogue [30]
Jaina Solo [25]
Talon Karrde [24]
(149 pts. 5 activations)

Han Rogue and Talon Karrde help to protect against Master Tactician and swapping. About the only thing Kyle is good at is taking out scrubs. What is it you want to do when you go against B&B? Oh yeah, take out the swap fodder. Kyle and Han can shoot stealthy swappers (Grans), and they have a decent chance of hitting Stormtroopers. Kyle, Corran, and Jaina can potentially deal with Vader when he gets close.

-200 pts. Tournament Quality-
"Forward Deflectors at Max"
Luke Skywalker, Jedi Master [74]
Corran Horn [39]
Han Solo, Rebel Hero [35]
Jaina Solo [25]
Talon Karrde [24]
Ugnaught Demolitionist [3]
(200 pts. - 6 activations)

Luke, Corran, and Jaina all have ways to deal with Ranged attacks (Corran and Jaina have an extra Force point from Luke, too, so they can Absorb Energy/Deflect one extra time). Charge the three of them across the map deflecting as they go (Luke will get ahead with Master Speed and take the most heat). Han is a great shooter, and if he gets close behind your main front, he can give Corran or Jaina a nice damage boost.

Please take the challenge and post your squads! It's all about exercising your squad-building creativity.

What I learned this week:
I never thought about using Kyle to take out B&B swap fodder.

I welcome any feedback on the Outside the Box posts or my squads. I'm also taking suggestions for next time.

Here are some other characters I'm considering if you just want to vote for one of these:
[3 Votes] Zam Wesell (Fringe)
[2 Votes] Kyle Katarn (New Republic)
[1 Vote] Darth Maul on Speeder (Separatists)
[1 Vote] HK-47 (Fringe)
[1 Vote] Warmaster Tsavong Lah (Yuuzhan Vong)
[0 Votes for the rest, so far]
Aayla Secura (Republic)
Ki-Adi-Mundi (Republic)
Mace Windu, Jedi Master (Republic)
Asajj Ventress (Separatists)
Grievous [anything but Supreme Commander] (Separatists)
Jabba the Hutt (Fringe)
Guri (Fringe)
Anyone else you want to try to make competitive.

Corran always was good and a fun piece to play as well. I've played with him a couple times and the new MR2 improves him quite a bit. Next vote Zam

your builds show what is wrong with the NR,

with the exception of your 100 point build your activations are terrible.

5 for 150?
6 for 200?!?!

Not only that but they are beatstick squads that will und up running into a horde of unactivated guns etc.

The cost of these pieces are too much.

Your 150 squad will not beat B&B. It doesn't matter if you stop master tactitian. It outactivates you by at least 5 pieces. You still have to contend with 18 squares of LV movement who can carve up anyone in your team in one go. So you lose Corran in the 2nd round and you win init. Max you will do is 60 (30 from Jaina, 30 from Rogue) and then you lose another piece (jaina) before LV walks away and is swapped.

and your 200 point squad would get battered by many 200 pointers.

My advice would be to drop Katarn from 150 and fit in activations or lobot or something

for 200 drop Luke and add in Mara, then see what you can do with the squad.

how about

Mara
Corran
Jaina
Han ST
Talon
lobot
5 x uggies

3 fast beats with support shooters and tayloring.

Here are my attempts. Both are bad, because I stink at squad building.

100 -
Corran
Jaina
HanTaun
Demo x3

I like Shinja's better, but this is what I came up with. Corran and Jaina wait for Bane, then slow him down a turn, maybe two. Han sits back and mobiles like crazy. The Uggies for activations.

150 -
Mara
Corran
Talon
New Republic Commander
New Republic Trooper x3
Demo

Like Shinja's, low in activations. Since we were already outside the box I thought I'd throw in some Troopers. I love the Commander, but the Troopers suck. Hope and pray I get some activations through Reserves.

Didn't try a 200 point squad.

100pt
New Republic Commander
New Republic Trooper x4
corran horn
150pt
mara jade
corran horn
Lando Calrissian, Dashing Scoundrel
Devaronian Bounty Hunter x3
Corellian Pirate
200pt

Corran
Jaina
Han STA
Jawa
Uggie x2

should be able to beat Bane if you can win init. Corran can move 12 and attack from 14 away. Han can make Jaina move 12 and attack once.

Then you pray to win init, Jaina Cunnings and Corran doubles and Mind Tricks.

Han tries to blast as many Uggies as possible and takes a shot at Bane.

Bane kills Jaina, Hope to win init again. Corran doubles and Tricks, Han shoots again.

Hope to win init and double and trick again. Shoot and move with Han.

Hopefully Corran lives.
