Boo! Welcome to the Halloween edition of Outside the Box. If you've never read an Outside the Box post before, you won't have never read one again.

I'm pretty sure Bastila Shan is the hardest character in the entire game to use competitively right now. Don't get me wrong, she's not the worst piece in the game, by a long shot. But all the worse pieces cost less and have better faction support, so you can still squeeze them into decent squads. Bastila just doesn't have the faction-support she needs to be great. Oh well, let's see what we can do.

Bastila Shan [46]
HP: 110
Defense: 19
Attack: +13
Damage: 20
----
Unique
Melee Attack
Triple Attack
----
Force 4
Battle Meditation
Force Valor
Lightsaber Deflect
Lightsaber Sweep

The Outside the Box Challenge:
Try to come up with a 100 point squad that could take on Bane and 6 Ugnaughts. A 150 point squad that could take on Black and Blue (LV or JH). And a 200 point squad that could be decent at a tournament. For mine, I'm also trying to make squads that haven't been posted on swshoebox by anyone else yet (which is going to be tough with the limited pool of Old Republic pieces to choose from).

Here are mine:

-100 points vs. Bane & 6 Ugnaughts-
"OR Army"
Bastila Shan [46]
Old Republic Soldier x4 [32]
Duros Explorer [7]
Nikto Soldier x3 [15]
(100 pts. - 9 activations)

Bring a map where shooters have good LOS to Gambit. Keep Bastila back with the shooters and activate Battle Meditation and Force Valor. With a combine from a Nikto or Duros, the Soldiers will be attacking at +14 for 20 damage (need a 10 to hit Bane in cover). If your opponent uses the Ugnaughts to screen Bane, don't bother combining fire that round and just use all 8 of your shooters to exterminate the little guys. Bastila will likely only do 60 damage max to Bane, so you'll need to hit him at least 7 times with your Soldiers. :) Good luck with that.
Depending on how things are going, you can either use Bastila to protect your shooters, or use your shooters to protect Bastila.

-150 points vs. Black & Blue-
"Sneaky Shan"
Bastila Shan [46]
Jedi Sentinel x5 [85]
Garindan [12]
Duros Explorer [7]
(150 pts. 8 activations)

I tried to come up with a Bastila squad that outactivated B&B, but I couldn't get anything that seemed decent. So I decided to fall back on Jedi Sentinels (point-for-point, the best thing the Old Republic has going for them). Bastila can activate Force Valor to boost the Sentinels, then they try to take out Stormtroopers. Even if (when) Vader manages to swap in he can only take out one Sentinel at a time (or more likely, Bastila first). Once the Sentinels eliminate all the swap fodder, Vader will have to engage in a fair fight. That's when you bring out the Spotters and hope to get some big hits in. 500 HP in a 150 squad is big. Even though the Sentinels can't put out damage very quickly, they can stand up to a lot before they die, so it will take Vader a while to finish them off.

-200 pts. Tournament Quality-
"Heaven Sentinels"
Bastila Shan [46]
Prince Xizor [40]
Bith Black Sun Vigo [20]
Jedi Sentinel x5 [85]
Wicket [8]
(200 pts. - 9 activations)

This squad has 7 accurate shooters and a boat-load of HP. Damage output is a little slow, so the fight might drag on a little. Keep Bastila back behind the wall of stealthy, evading, 70 HP jedi (hopefully also around a corner to stop accurate shooters from picking her off). Try to use Xizor to soak up damage (or better yet, to prevent attacks with Pheromones) when you can. Once the battle transitions into melee, Accurate Shot becomes much less useful, so it's okay to lose him. Be sure to get off your Accurate Advantageous Twin Attack with the Bith every round.

Please take the challenge and post your squads! It's all about exercising your squad-building creativity.

What I learned this week:
More Jedi Sentinels = better OR squad. Also, Old Republic Soldiers actually aren't bad figures. Compare them to any non-Unique shooter that costs less than 10 (except Stormtroopers, which are better than everything)--they aren't bad.

I welcome any feedback on the Outside the Box posts or my squads. I'm also taking suggestions for next time.

Here are some other characters I'm considering if you just want to vote for one of these:
[3 Votes] Corran Horn (New Republic)
[2 Votes] Zam Wesell (Fringe)
[1 Vote] Darth Maul on Speeder (Separatists)
[1 Vote] HK-47 (Fringe)
[1 Vote] Kyle Katarn (New Republic)
[1 Vote] Warmaster Tsavong Lah (Yuuzhan Vong)
[0 Votes for the rest, so far]
Aayla Secura (Republic)
Ki-Adi-Mundi (Republic)
Mace Windu, Jedi Master (Republic)
Asajj Ventress (Separatists)
Grievous [anything but Supreme Commander] (Separatists)
Jabba the Hutt (Fringe)
Guri (Fringe)
Anyone else you want to try to make competitive.

Another great article but I have to say if you really want to maximize her CE you pretty much should be encorporating OR COmmanders IMO to take advantage of double attack for your troopers.

Just a suggestion.

I originally had an OR Commander in the 100 point squad with 2 OR Troopers and 4 Niktos. But then I realized that for the 18 points I was spending on the Commander, I could get 2 more OR Soldiers and upgrade one of the Niktos to a Duros. Either way, I get 4 attacks from the Soldiers. With the second option, I get more activations and a potential Spotter.

As soon as you have more than two Soldiers, though, the Commander definitely becomes worth it.

I didn't use Soldiers in 150, because against Stormtroopers, Soldiers aren't great. They have a hard time hitting, and they die quickly, and their 20 damage is wasted.

At 200, I really could've gone with a huge Soldier swarm, but Sentinels are such an enticing piece to me. The only reason I didn't play Sentinels in 100 is because Bane eats Sentinels for breakfast and asks for seconds. :)

That's almost exactly the squad the Ulic wanted to beat a while back. Drop Xizor for CS Aurra and you've got it. From what I've heard it's a really annoying squad if you roll well.

How much spare time do you have on your hands, that's the third one this week!

Yeah, I purposely went with Xizor and Wicket instead of Aurra and Garindan to make it a different squad. I like the idea of all that accurate shot.

Second one. I usually do it every Weds. This week I did one on Monday too.

looks ok, but honestly OR is such a weak faction I don't have any fun playing with them. Maybe the set after FU might make me want to dust off the flash gordon faction. (those OR soldiers look real goofy)

My 100:
http://www.swshoebox.com/displaySquad.c ... &arg=71263

Using this Aurra is a beast and gives me accurate against Bane. Bastila can stand her own for one round against him and with Aurra constantly shooting it may work.

My 150:
http://www.swshoebox.com/displaySquad.c ... &arg=57885

Boosted followers for Bastila. Boba and Aurra make a lethal duo with the +2/+2 bonus.

I prefer to group her with Consulars. I love Consulars, the only real reason I play OR.

I don't have time to build a squad now (at work) but I usually pair Bastila up with Jango and use Valor.
OR I prefer to use the Jedi Guardians and include a couple of weequay Leaders to give them mighty swing.

With the addition of the Weequay Leader's Mighty Swing, I think the Jedi Guardian and even the Consular become more viable.

I haven't tried it out, but how about something like this:

Bastila (46)
Jedi Consular x2 (32)
Weequay Leader (13)
??? (9)

Everyone is going to be decent at plowing through the Ugnauts, and if the Consulars act before Bane, they have a 50% chance each of activating him (so, collectively, 75% chance per round of rendering Bane useless). Each of them also has a decent chance (45%, I think; 55% with Force Valor) to do 30 damage. One of the advantages of the Consular is that he can move, attack, and stun in the same turn, and if the dice are with you, they'll be able to wipe out about almost half of Bane's HP on their own.

The Weequay Leader hits less often (but also for 30 damage), and with his Cleave, is great at clearing out some of those Ugnauts. Early on (while the Consular's soften up Bane), that's what Bastila's good for, too.

There are a few possibilities for filling in those last 9 points:

--An OR Soldier to snipe some Ugnauts and maybe get a shot or two at Bane.

--A Trandoshan Merc: The chances of him hitting are low, but if he pulls it off, he can do as much as 70 damage to Bane.

--Wicket is not great on his own, but an exta 20% chance to allow everyone to hit Bane is nice (and makes Bastila's 60 damage almost gauranteed).

--The Gotal Fringer has a small chance of hitting Bane, but is worth considering for that 5% chance of disintegrating him.

---Finally, the Chandra-Fan Pickpocket might seem like an odd choice, but if Bane hasn't activated, he actually winds up with a 70% chance to hit him for 30 damage (assuming Force Valor and the Weequay Leader are in effect). Statistically, I think this might be one of the best choices for the cost.

At a 200 point level, how about this:

Bastila (46)
Jango Fett BH (56)
Boba Fett Enforcer (38 )
Jedi Sentinel (17)
Jedi Consular (16)
Lobot (27)

200 even. Lobot gives you the needed versatility. My first thought was to use an ASP to give Jango some pseudo mobile. Quarren Assassin would probably also be good (since they're decent shooters to start with anyway). I like the Consulars as well because of their Alter/Stun combo. Makes them GREAT support pieces. The Sentinel is a great choice since she's a shooter and has Satchel Charge. You don't have to bring in Ugos with Lobot if you don't want to.

Bah...edited for Fool. :P

I prefer to think of it as under-performing. If you give her everything she has and only double attack, is she worth 36pts? (you usually up a cost by about 10pts when adding an extra attack). I think she is, but hte problem is that at 46, she really cant do much...yet. That and her CEs are pretty much worthless.
