My mates have been asking me for a few months to join their 40K league. I wasn't too sure. It's another expense and I'm a bit rubbish when it comes to painting.

But I am a gamer, no question about that; I go out gaming four nights a week playing RPGs & Star Wars minis with different groups of friends.

When the news of Star Minis being cancelled hit I figured what the heck and chose to take up a new hobby, I will still be playing Star Wars Minis.

So, Warhammer 40K. I chose ORKS. Why? Well they look fun and have some of the best fluff in 40K. Fairly easy to paint; it doesn't matter if they or their vehicles look a bit messy. And I can't lose; Orks just want to fight. If they die it doesn't count because they are dead and if they run away it doesn't count because they'll just go get more boyz. Oh, and I love the names, Nobz, Meganobz, Flash Gits, etc. :D

I've only had a couple of games but I'm loving the assembling and painting - I never thought I would. And I'm already considering another army; either Space Wolves, Blood Angels or Chaos Space Marines.

Anyone else play 40K? What armies do you play?

The only issue with 40K is the rulebook. You spend all the time to paint up the mini's and in the next version of the rules, your mini's stats have changed to make them less them optimal.

Ask your friends about borrowing one of their old painted armies.

That's the thing, all but one of them are new players too, one with less units than me. They have had more practice games than me but we start our campaign this week with me having just two games under my belt. I think it will be fun with my aim to win at least one game.

I am aware of the Games Workshop tendancy to update rulebooks every 2-3 years, I'll deal with that when I get there depending on what everyone else does.

it's an increasingly popular game
especially in the midwest

they are doing several things now that was unheard of 6-8 years ago for table top game companies
Lower Pirce points on Boxed sets
More Plastic Miniatures, light weight, easy to customize and Less expensive all around
Complete combat units in one box
"Starter" armies (1000 points) for less than $100.00
Quality control guarntees (if thereis an error in product, free replacments)
Demo Kits to stores called "Black Box" -preview figs and rule book
"Stock It" level stores get $150.00 per quarter of "Prize Support" merchandise for tournies

I bought the starter sets myself, I bought the Assault on Blackreach (and was able to swap the Space Marines for more Orks) and I bought the Ork Megaforce.

I've probably spend the same as a couple of SWM cases, but I'm having fun assmbling them. I've even done my first custom;

This is the Space Marine Attack Bike but I've obviously converted it using a couple of Ork Boyz.

My WAAAGH!!! is coming along nicely. I can now field 1500pts of painted Ork models (just need a little detailing on the face of the Boyz).

I've decided to concentrate my painting now as Evil Sunz/Speed Freekz.
As well as the looted Assault bike I've also got a looted Vindicator. My next model will be Heresy too, I'm going for a looted Imperial Guard Valkyrie, he he...
