to have to take your website down for 2-3 hours EVERY WEEK for "maintenance."

There are only two internet programs that I know of that have to do this so frequently.

One is the World of Warcraft on-line game program that hosts around 40 or 50 servers with an active subscription base of approximately 11 million.

The other is the Wizards of the Coast message board.

Just thing, it would suck even more if BOTH of those things were down for maintenance at the same time!

I figure that WOTC must have their entire site, forums and everything, all rolled up in one mega server. So any time they want to do anything on the forums or the website itself, they have to take the whole thing off-line in order to effect the changes. I mean, their web-team hasn't exactly shown themselves to be competent in other ares (spelling errors easily caught by spell check!), so I'm not sure why we expect the website to have been constructed in a manner that makes it simple for them to do "maintenance".

I dont think they do have everything on one server. I mean you can go to dci. You can read about their products. They just seem to have some issues with the forum software.

But it seems to be the same problem on a regular basis.

When I started working in a new area of the plant 5 years ago. There were 7 full time contract programmers and 2 part time. I could not figure out what all these folks did. I followed them each around for a day and listened a lot.

There was one server running process control equipment that had to be rebooted every three days or it would crash. I asked how long has this problem existed "from day 1" and this from the guy that installed it.

Crazy stuff like that just happens.

You'd think with a problem like that, that the system would get redone or the hardware or software would be replaced, but then again that's possiblely been done and jsut hasn't worked for whatever reason.
