George Lucas is working on a new live-action Star Wars series for television that is being described as Deadwood meets The Sopranos in outer space, the New York Post reported today (Monday), citing a report that appeared on the sci-fi website collider.com. Lucas's primary Star Wars characters, including Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Darth Vader, will not appear in the series, the newspaper said. The Post said that Lucas has held talks with HBO about carrying the series and has also approached at least one broadcast network, but he has yet to make a deal. The newspaper did not explain the reasons for the broadcast and cable networks' reluctance, especially since the Star Wars movies represent the most successful film franchise in history. Lucas is also working on an animated TV series, The Clone Wars, which is also based on the Star Wars tales.

Interesting may be the word. I have HBO so yeeeaaaa for me if it goes that way, but I'd be surprised that Lucas would think about ad free content for the series. Since he's over the top with marketing this belongs on prime time network TV and at worst a large free cable channel for massive exposure to new toys.

I agree, though, it just screams for advertising tie-ins. Of course, he could make a deal with HBO to have a few minutes at the end of the show for ads.

Yeah, I highly doubt they'll release it to HBO only. There's WAY too many people that don't pay for those extra channels. I know if it only releases on HBO I'll either be finding a friend's house that I can watch it at, or I'll be waiting to download it from iTunes or something.

But I also agree, I think they'd want it to be on a major network. I also can't see any of the major networks turning it down. But since it's at least a year and half away still, I'm not too worried about it. Rick Mccullum even said in one interview, that by the time the show was ready to go on the air, technology might be to the point where it would be best for LFL if they only did the show as available via internet or download, rather than aired on TV. We'll see I guess.

I could see Lucas telling HBO that he will show it on their channel and take a cut of every new member that signs up for HBO.

I am with you though Lobo. I will wait until I can download it rather than sign-up for HBO.

This sounds exactly like something Lucas would try to pull; too bad viewership is in decline for the HBO channels.
