Okay so I was playing around with a core rulebook and two friends. It was all of our first time playing so we were all lost. They both made characters and I was trying to GM but they died about ten minutes in. I did not through a lot at them. Just a few stormtroopers. I think we did a lot wrong I guess I just need someone to kind of go to for reference. We have nobody who really knows what to do around here.

So you had 2 PCs, right? How many Stormies did you throw at them? You definitely want to start small the first game so it's possible you just overloaded the amount they could have gone up against.

Two stormies. But the PCs only had like 1 and 2 for attack.

That's not unusual for an attack of 1 or 2 for first level. Did you use the generic Stormies?

Yes. And we were wondering if weapons gave attack bonuses.

depending on what kind of characters, what race, and how you decided to build your characters, can all make it easier or harder for your players to survive.

In terms of attacking, for the most part weapons do not give an attack bonus, unless they are modified with Tech Specialist upgrades.

However several basic feats can up the attack, like Point Blank Shot and Weapon Focus {whatever weapon group}.

Also, ranged characters will add their Dex bonus to attack, which is usually 2 or more for a good shooter, and melee characters will add strength to attack (a good bonus for them is 3 or more).

Finally what class they are will determine if they get a +1 at level 1 or not to their Base Attack Bonus. Soldiers and Jedi get a +1 at level 1, while Scouts, Scoundrels and Nobles do not.

Survivability at level one can be hard, as most enemies will have weapons that can do a significant amount of damage (IIRC stormies can do 3d8 damage), which can be as much as half you're PC's health. ouch!

when I create enemies for my PCs, I like to find characters that can hit them with about 1/3 chances, while the PCs have about a 50-50 chance of hitting mine.

in the future maybe consider adjusting the damage you do with bigger guns (ie, drop from 3d8s to 3d6s perhaps).
Sometimes you can choose to start with slightly higher level chacters (3 or 4 is a good point i think).

Thank you so much. I might try and have them start at like level 3 or four I think they would enjoy that more.

Well, the thing to remember, is that if you're the GM, then you control EVERYTHING. If you want to decide that your players don't get killed during this encounter, when it looks VERY likely that they will, then you can do things so that they survive. Intentionally don't use some of your abilities, or make moves that might not seem that smart. Remember, playing RPG is not at all like playing SWMs skirmishes. The point of RPG is not for the GM to 'beat' the PCs, or vice versa. The idea is for you all to build a story together. So, if that means the GM has to fudge a few things here and there to get the job done, then it's OK.

Remember, the RPG rule book is more like the Pirate Code when it comes to GMs. It's not so much a code...it's more of a guideline. ;)

If a player does go down in a fight, dont forget they can spend a Force Point to not die.

Handy ability really, but I dont think it should work in every situation.

They could always Parlay, as well.

I've had PC's that have been close to death at level 1. As GM I often will prevent the deaths of the PC's early on. Even if the character would normally die I will change the circumstances to allow their survival. I don't think it's right to spend two hours building a character and then have them die promptly. I have however adjusted story archs later in games when a character dies.

But I think combat at level 1 is almost a no-no unless they are battling street gang punks that are same level. Howver that does not mean combat wont happen at level one. Im my current game everyone has been in some kind of fight at the first level, in an elevator, a hallway and in an office cubical.
