Post subject:  Pa-Md Regional Results

I will say that the first ever Pa-Md regional was a success despite the constant hurdles we had to overcome. 18 players showed up and endured cramped space, a late start and finish, and improvised prize support and showed a lot of class and sportsmanship along the way...but more on that later. Here is the finishing order along with the squads they ran:

"Totin' Wookiee"

Post subject:  Re: Pa-Md Regional Results

Congrats to Ian, Ted, Matt and Kris for making the finals. You guys played excellant games all day and you should all be proud. I think the day was great considering all the problems we had in trying to pull this regional off.

Jim, you get a special thanks.....If it wasn't for you, we never would have had this regional. Your dedication to the game is to be commended and I am proud to call you a friend. With all the issues that came up, (Fallston store closing with no notice, all the problems with finding a new place, prize support not showing up, etc.) you handled it with no complaints. I think everyone owes you a great deal of thanks. I also want to give special thanks to Dean Miller. Dean, I had quite a few conversations with Jim over the last month, and he told me about all your support. Without you as well, we would not have been able to do this. I know that you have a lot on your plate, but you took time to help Jim make this happen and offered quite a bit of support......Thank You again. And one more person......Charlie the store owner. Charlie is not a member here, but I want to thank him anyway. He agreed to this event at the last minute even though he only has a small store. He was gracious all day and made us all as comfortable as we could possibly be.

I hope everyone had as much fun as I did, and I hope I get to meet all of you again!!! What a fun day!!!!

Thanks for the squad write ups. Looked like a great event even with some unfortunate circumstances. Hope to hear about some more details on the games from those that went. Also, a great showing from one of the the Charlotte guys, 3rd place!

Post subject:  Re: Pa-Md Regional Results

Okay, now that all of that typing is done lol...

There are a lot of people to thank for this event coming off at all. I was pretty much a funnel, sending the work everyone else did in the right direction. First, Jim Fraser, for acting on our conversation at GenCon last year and getting the ball rolling; Dean Miller for too much to type in a day, Ray Becker for the great job he did/is doing as the regional coordinator and for being my friend, Charlie Brubaker who is the owner of 'That Game Place' for letting us have a place to play and moving an event to make it happen AND helping me improvise with prize support, Matt Francella for driving a long way to play and helping us out immensely with prize support in the form of some AWESOME new maps and his Map Pack 3, and finally Tom Hoffman. As soon as Tom found out the store closed in Fallston without warning he was there making phone calls, getting phone numbers for me, being my liason to all of the Md players he could contact, and keeping my spirits up when things were at their bleakest. And, oh yeah, he was our photographer.

I would also like to thank every single player who took the time to come to our regional and endure some pretty cramped conditions and a very long day. I saw a lot of the kind of sportsmanship that I think distinguishes our board game from others. I made a lot of new friends over the course of the weekend; new friends from Nc, Va and Walter from Philly. The toughest part of my job all day was not judging the event; it was standing all day because there wasn't an empty chair in the store. That was the biggest event I have ever judged, and the first regional I have ever attended. The fact that it was so smooth is all on you guys. Thanks.

Post subject:  Re: Pa-Md Regional Results

Now, some more stats.

We had 18 players; 7 New Republic Squads, 4 Republic, 2 Seperatist, 2 Rebel, 2 Imperial, and 1 Old Republic.

At the regional we had 4 different groups represented. (The Md and Pa guys are kind of blending together now, but technically we've come from 2 areas.) All 4 groups were represented in the top 6. There's nothing wrong when a single group can dominate a tournament, but I thought it was more fun when everyone had someone to root for and every group has something to be proud of.

It is my opinion that the new floor rules helped speed up play to a degree, despite the fact that 10 of the 18 squads had some form of tempo control, and evade was common as well. 23 of the 45 games played in the swiss rounds were completed before time was called; a little better than 50%.

Ironically Ian Gordon almost didn't make the final rounds due to the new scoring. After 4 rounds of swiss he was tied for 7th with 6 points. He won his last game and won the tiebreaker with 2 other players due to his winning pct. Well done, Ian.

Post subject:  Re: Pa-Md Regional Results

Now, my soapbox.

I have always been an advocate for good sportsmanship and fair play. I was pleased at what I saw at the regional and I'd like to relate just a few examples of it:

Jordan Graham, after he defeated the young Jordan Davis called him back to the table and played another game, giving him some tips and pointers. This is not unusual for Jordan at all as everyone in the Md and Pa group can attest to. Every player I talked to who played Jordan mentioned the pleasant demeanor and friendly game he played. Charlie, our store owner noticed that attitude himself and awarded Jordan a good sportsmanship award.

What was Jordan's prize? Lord Hoth. When Matt Francella became involved in the conversation as to what to give Jordan, Matt went out to his car and got the figure from his own collection and brought it back in for Charlie to present. Matt would have given him a Map Pack but Jordan had already bought one from him during the course of the day. Matt's generosity was greatly appreciated by everyone who attended; the map created by AG7 for Ravencon is beautiful and Matt also allowed me to have one. Matt Francella is a commodity we cannot afford to be without and I urge all of you to buy his maps sold at Miniature Market.

When Ian Gordon won the final game and became the Pa-Md 2010 Regional Champion he didn't take the GenCon badge because he is unable to go to GenCon this year. He opened his booster boxes, dumped the contents on the table, and invited anyone who wanted figures to take their pick. Class act, Ian...thank you.

These are just a few examples of the kind of things that went on yesterday. Considering the very cramped conditions and long day (11:50am start to 9:39pm) attitudes were great. Oh, there were exclamations referring to rotton luck you'll hear in every tournament but no real conflicts. I am proud to have judged an event containing a great group of guys.

I too want to add my thanks to Matt Francella. Matt, it was great to finally meet you and your generousity to the game is overwhelming. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to seeing you again.

Jim....if you can, put people's screen names next to there name. I know you may not know them all, but any you can would be gre!at. I know I didn't get everyone's screen name, but it is nice to be able to keep in touch with them!

Thanks to all...Tom AKA Zalkrie

Why don't we do this...everyone who would like to have their screen name associated with this thread indicate who they are in a post. I'll be honest; I've been pouring through all of my paperwork typing today and I just want to go lay down on the couch and watch a movie with my wife and daughter now lol. 'Sides, I'd really like to see the players start posting their experiences like a couple have done already.

And as far as my games go.....uuuugggghhhh. I won't blame it all on luck, because I did play some good players. I did have a strech between game two and three though that zuckess had eight attacks in a row where I rolled a one or a two to hit. When Zuckess couldn't stick....I was doooooomed. LOL. Also, my oppents evade save percentage against me for the day was about 90%. So I had a terrible strech were I could not hit anyone, and then when I did, they evaded it. That was until my last match of the day against Matt Francella. Matt, I am going to apologize again.....alll my bad luck of the day streamed to you in our match. I can not believe the number of saves Flobi failed. Your die betrayed you that match....LOL. I still had a great day and I would not have changed a thing!!

Please bear with me...this'll be a loooooooooooong post.

First off let me say driving 7+ hours to an event is a long way to drive but (and..speaking for myself here) I had an excellent time with everyone I played and you all are great guys!

Next let me say a HUGE thank you to Darth_Jim for hosting myself and Spryguy1981 at his house. He is a great guy to those that have yet to meet him and he really knows his stuff. Thank you again Jim for letting us stay, we really had a great time.

Finally I'll say thank you to the store that hosted the event. Yes...it was small and cramped but considering what these guys had been through and all the bad things that happened with the other game store, this place worked out great! If you get a chance check out the website: http://www.thatgamestore.com to see the pictures they took of all of us outside. We had an awesome turnout!

Ok, now I'll skip the whole 7 hour drive thing where Matt and I talked about what we'd run, what we would see, etc etc etc.

Here is my squad: Dash and Doublemint
General Obi Wan Kenobi
Ferus Olin
Dash Rendar, Renegade Smuggler
Jedi Weapons Master X 2
R2D2 Astromech Droid
Rodian Diplomat
Rodian Brute X 2
Ugnaught Demolitionist X 2
Mouse Droid
R-7 Astromech Doid
Map: Ruined Base (sorry Jim, I think I labeled it wrong on the sheet. I still don't have the official DCI names memorized yet)

We successfully made it to Jim's house and we each played a 200 pt warm-up game with him the night before and did to a little trading. With a few hours sleep we made our way to the store for registration, setup, and meet 'n greet. Parings were made and lets get the report started. (I'll keep these short)

Round 1: Myself vs. Ed Peters
He won map roll, so I was a little unsure of how well I would do. Needless to say it wasn't that bad for my squad. I did have to sacrifice Dash to get his troopers and draw Vader out. But once they were out in the open the Doublemint twins (JWMs) and Ferus took care of them. He missed a few Djem So's and that did hurt. Plus Lando bit the dust a little early but he played it very very well. Result: Win

Round 2: Myself vs. Roy Scales
Our map choices were the same so I won and started on the inside. Which didn't help me too much. He played Kir like a pro and ate through my squad pretty easily. GOWK didn't make all of his Soresu saves and even though Kir did eventually die most of my squad was gone too. I scored about 70 points or so. Needless to say it wasn't a great matchup for my squad (Cad and TBSV definately did their job) and again, it was played quite well. Result: Loss

Round 3: Myself vs. Marcous Morton
I lost map and we were off to Cloud City. I started outside and just waited for his activations to go by the wayside. Dash did his job this time and put a big hurt on a few pieces. But, he knew his map and made a B-line for protected Gambit. Once I got there I did manage to take care of Kyle, Cade, and his uggos but GMLS chewed through everyone else. When all was said and done GOWK, R7, and a brute or two were left standing. I knew at that point things would not end well...and they didn't. Great job keeping them together and making me come to him to attempt to score more than 3 pts from uggos. Result: Loss

Round 4: Myself vs. Justin Warrenfeltz
Maps were the same again and I won, took inside, but I was worried I had made the wrong choice. He played Zuck right by keeping GOWK glued in the open, but by then I had moved the twins and Ferus around and drew out Mara, Kol, and Ganner. This game though....Dash failed me. I tried to go after Dodonna and even with GOWK's +4 bonus I was unable to take care of General D with Dash missing shots. Luckily my +27 Def JWMs managed to take care of what they needed to and Ferus played his part of BG. Result: Win

Break time:
Yay for food, and my apologies that we were a little late getting back (we had friends come and watch us all day from NJ so we were eating and chatting it up with them)

Round 5: Myself vs. Bob Fissel
I won map and Bob put me on the outside of the base. His acts were low so I had some time for setup and a few good shots from Dash (with R2's help). But it was going to have to get dirty and I knew it so the twins and Ferus went to work. First taking out Kyp and preventing the FP5 and also putting some dmg on Luke. Next he surprised me by not letting GMLS completely destroy the twins but instead he levitated him close to GOWK and proceeded to kill him. He missed a few attacks and didn't re-roll them (even after I had mentioned that he could/should). GOWK lived and took the attacks. (I also did remind him about Djem So but Bob ended up forgetting about it) The twins got close to Ganner and his lucky little brute slapped Ferus with a crit. Final acts were him levitiating Luke next to Ganner to prevent the twins from turning their attention to GMLS, but a FP 3 finished the job. Result: Win

Wrap up:
I completed my goal of going 3-2, my best friend made it to the finals and got a GenCon badge, and I ended up with some sweet maps from Jedicartographer as my prize support! All in all, one of the best trips I have made to an event. Again...I can't say it enough, everyone there are great people (also great players too) and if any of you get a chance to come to the Charlotte area be sure to look me up! Next regionals stop for myself (unless work gets in the way) will be Atlanta!

Was great playing you! Those JWMs were nasty, and it's a shame Mara couldn't do what she was designed to, putting 120 on a single target. At least I got Ferus before he managed any Dark Temptations! I'll take the small victories.

Post subject:  Re: Pa-Md Regional Results

Ok folks, I am generally not very good at writing play-reports so you will have to bear with my extremely poor grammar and jumbled writing. THis is also a very long report so if you have the brain power to read I commend you.

Game 1 vs. Rusty Davis on Ravaged Base

He wins map roll, and I defer side to him. He sets up on the outside of the map and I take the inside. With Dodonna I am able to out activate him which ended up being big. Approaching the end of the 1st round, he finishes out his move and has his R7 in a position where I can draw a very tight bead on him with Han if I move 12, and then take Leia’s CE. I do this and make the roll which kills his lone override. Then I lock him out of my side of the map.

Round 2 we maneuver around things again, and his 3 Uggie Demo’s are in position for me to snipe. I manage to kill 2 of the 3, and then win initiative.

Round 3 Han takes initiative and finishes off the other Uggie, leaving him exposed to fire. His ranger fires and misses, then doubles and hits, which I failed my evade save. From there though I was able to lock his shooters out of Han’s LoS and pull my squad back to cover most of the middle section of gambit outside of the big room. Leia CE’s Han and he kills another ranger. My R7 locks the other entry point at the top of the map.

Next turn is the final round and I maneuver around and kill 2 more Rangers, leaving him with 2. Time is called with me winning 87-10 or something like that.

Game 2 vs. Marcous Morton on Cloud City

Both of us are using the same map and he wins side roll. He defers side choice to me and I proceed to take the inside. I set up my entire squad in the lower room where I had complete LoS on the approach from the outside. Round 1 he Master Speed’s Luke into gambit and takes the early lead, I fire both of Han’s shots which he successfully defenses.

Round 2 I position Rieekan, Dodonna, and Juno to combine fire the rest of the match. He is quickly out of activations, and I lobbed Han into the Carbon Freezing room. From there I am able to draw a bead to Cade-Padawan, and with Han’s shot and Leia’s CE shot Cade dies. Leia at this point also put 20 on GMLS which he chose not to defense. With most of the doors being blown, I run one of my R7’s towards gambit to claim it for round 3.

Round 3, he moves his pieces around and moves back towards the center corridor of doorways. Keeping 7 squares away from Kyle-Battlemaster Han and Leia do 110 damage with Leia hitting her shot also. My R7 hops into gambit. Dengar takes a shot at GMLS and hits which he misses the defense save and then rerolls and makes it. GMLS still at 130, Kyle at 30.

Round 4: I win initiative round 4 and I use Leia to kill and Uggie and CE Han, combining with Dodonna to ensure that I can only miss on a 1. The attack hits dealing the last 30 to Kyle and killing him. He then uses Luke’s Master Speed and charges in on Han. On his attack he rolls a 1, rerolls and then hits, Han down to 50. His second attack rolls another one. I activate Luke and pull Han out of that ever deadly adjacent to GMLS spot and take Han’s normal turn. Combining with Rieekan and Juno I roll and hit. He fails both defense saves and takes 40, bringing him down to 90 and sitting on 3 FP. I move Dengar to a clear LoS to shoot and set up for the Final if I can deal the last 40 damage to Luke, his attack hits, which he defenses and makes the save, dropping down to 2 FP. Both R7’s are now sitting in gambit for me and Round 5 starts.

Round 5: He moves Luke adjacent to Han again and twins dropping Han down to 10 HP, Luke at 4 FP. I lob Ferus adjacent to Luke and then proceed to double. He misses both of his attacks and the reroll. Han then shoots and hits combining with Dodonna on the shot, I roll a 1. Leia CE’s and Han shoots. He defenses and misses the save and the reroll taking him down to 40HP, the magic number, 2FP left. Dengar activates and uses Final Shot, the attack hits and Luke defenses. Round ends with Luke at 40 HP left and 1 FP.

Round 6 starts and I win initiative thanks to Rieekan’s recon. I charge in with Lobbin’ Luke and go for the double cunning. The first attack hits, he uses the last FP to defense and makes the save, then misses the Djem So. 2nd attack hits also dropping Luke to 10HP. He Djem So’s and makes the save, and attacks back. He hits the first attack putting 30 on my Luke, who then Djem So’s back and makes the save. He hits the 2nd attack killing GMLS, who then makes his Djem So and drops my Luke in the process. After that I killed the last 3 buggies and won. I enjoyed this game as it wasn’t a waiting game, but a real-time action.

Game 3 vs. Roy Scales on Cloud City.

I win map roll and Roy defers to me, on which I once again start on the inside of the map.

Round 1 and 2 go by and it’s just positioning. He gets to gambit and I continue to set up my squad, though I did kill a brute that was moving up towards the tunnel.

Round 3: I maneuver and wait until he has moved Cad, Kir, and Jarael. He has an LoS on my R7 that I forget about with his Vigo, but he misses the attack. I then mobiled in with Ferus and swung on another brute and killed it and then mobiled back into cover making sure Ferus could be seen as my bait.

Round 4: He indeed takes my bait and moves 5 with Cad to shoot my Ferus early. He hits 3 of the 4 attacks, 2 of which I manage to evade. Ferus is at 80HP. In a very smart move by him he eliminates Dodonna with his Jarael by swapping with a brute and forces me into 2 activations. I move Ferus up to the swapped brute and kill it to score the points. I then moved an R7 and locked his Twi-lek Vigo in the room in the top corner of the map on the outside. He moves a brute and attacks my Juno and misses. Next turn I use Luke to lob Han to where I am within 6 of Cad. I base Cad and pray for a 5. I rolled it and put 40 on Cad. Kir spends a force point to base Han and twins putting 60 on him and dropping him down to 10. I then CE Han and he shoots and kills Cad Bane. Dengar takes a shot on Kir Kanos and hits dropping him down to 90. Ferus is now in gambit for me.

Round 5: He takes initiative with Thrawn naturally and twin attacks Han to kill him. He then moves out of my LoS. I move Juno to disrupt Kir Kanos, and then Luke lobs Ferus adjacent to him. He moves his Vigo to open a door where he can shoot next turn. Ferus then doubles Kir Kanos and hits both dropping Kir to 50HP. I then use Leia to CE Ferus who promptly Crits and kills Kir. Jarael moves into position to get to Leia on the next turn.

Round 6, Last Round: He is down to Jarael, Thrawn, Ozzel, Mas, the Vigo and 2 fodder pieces. Jarael moves into Juno’s disruptive range and puts 10 on Leia who makes the shockstaff save with a force point. I run Ferus all the way down the map and base Ozzel with him, following with a mouse droid. He moves his Mas in and kills my mouse so Ferus cannot get Leia’s CE. I override his Vigo back in the corner room to where he can’t do anything in this round, and then shoot at Thrawn with Leia; she misses, and has no fp to reroll, then CE’s Juno who kills another fodder piece. I then lobbed Dengar out and let him shoot Ferus with Ozzel. Dengar Final Shots Mas, and then the game ends. 3-0 at this point.

Game 4 vs. Ian Gordon on Muunilist.

He wins map and I defer side, he starts on the pillared side leaving me in the room. I won’t go into much detail in this game because it was a mirror match for all intents and purposes and was extremely slow. I lob Ferus and get him into gambit on the first turn.

Round 2: At one point he moved an ERC to take the twin on Ferus w/Cunning and he missed one and I evaded the other, and then locked the door on the pillar side to the area that contains the vault. Luke lobs Han who takes the Leia CE and hits the ERC. ERC fails the evade and then on Han’s turn I shoot Chewie and hit dropping him to 90 w/no opportunist on the missed evade and then ran him out of LoS. I then based Chewie with Ferus and attacked dropping him to 70. Ferus makes some more evade saves Yadda Yadda. Ferus still in gambit

Round 3: He moves Chewie away and Ferus precisions on the AoO dropping Chewie to 40. More positioning and crap, and I run Dengar and Luke into gambit. I decide to be really gutsy with Ferus and run 13 to base Crix on my turn. Han shoots and then takes Bothan CE to put Ferus at 10 left, Dodonna hit him earlier.

Round 4: My gamble does not pay off and he wins initiative. He kills Ferus who joins my R7 and uggo that had died earlier. Round keeps going on and I kill a mouse droid. He moves his ERC to take shots on Dengar who makes evades and I put 20 on the ERC. Time is called and I score gambit pulling out a 39-38 win. (I’ll go into what I learned from this game at the end of the synopsis).

Game 5 vs. Evan Savage on Cloud City.

I win map roll and he chooses to set up on the inside. This was probably my favorite game of the whole event. Evan is a such a nice guy and an all around fun person to play. He very much reminds me of Gray Whitsett.

It started out slow with us overriding each other in and out of rooms. I manage to get a shot off on a rodian in round 1 but he evades, he does get into gambit.

Round 2: This round goes by slowly till the end when he moves his R7 to where I can get a bead on it with Han. I move Han 12 and then pass the turn to him. He moves a brute and I then elect to move 2. My R7 opens the door that leads from the outside to the inside on the lower half of the map, and I CE Han. He kills the R7 who was a reinforcement but enabled me to be able to override better. He scores gambit and I don’t.

Round 3: He moves Kyle, Mara, and Ganner into the turbolifts down the big hallway at the bottom, and I then move Leia into the lone gambit square at the corner beneath the door outside and kill the brute holding the two turbolifts open, after moving Juno up next to Leia, not counting the squares for grenades. I then use my R7 to lock Mara and Ganner in the turbolift, and with Kyle in the back corner of his lift none of them could get out.

Round 4: He wins init and defers to me, I spin Dodonna. He then moves 2 and uses Lobot to unlock Kyle’s turbolift. Kyle mobiled out and grenaded Juno. I was praying for that save more than any other save of the day until the last game which I will get to momentarily. I made Juno’s save, Leia also made hers with the reroll. With Kyle done and Mara and Ganner locked in a turbolift with no way out, I moved Juno up 2 squares to disrupt Kyle’s evade and then moved Han to where he had an LoS on Kyle but outside of 6 squares. Han shoots and hits putting 40 on Kyle. He moved Wedge to shoot Juno and misses. Moving 1 for me so as not to tip my hand, Leia CE’s Han and he sticks 50 more on Kyle, leaving him with the magic number 50HP left. He moves an Uggie to where he can blow Mara’s door next turn. I then move 2 again and Luke lob’s Dengar to a clear LoS on Kyle. He final shots and kills Kyle and the Ghost scoring the necessary 64pts.

Round 5, Last Round: He takes initiative and blows Mara’s door. I move Ferus up and put 20 on Mara. Ganner levitates Mara away from Ferus and she then moves 6 and kills Han. I then start whittling away on Mara hoping to drop her down to 50HP. Juno shoots and combining with Rieekan hits her, dropping her to 80. Next turn I use Leia and shoot putting 20 more on her and dropping her to 60. Leia CE’s Juno who hits dropping Mara to 40. I should have activated 2 that turn but neglected to do so and he then based my Dengar to take away the Final Shot on Mara. I gave up the AoO and shot Mara hoping maybe to crit and score that 45pts. Time was called before the round ended and I win. 5-0

Playoff 1 Rematch vs. Ian Gordon on Muunilist again

I lost map roll again, but this time set up on the pillared side. This was the same old story as the first game between us, a lot of positioning and not a lot of action. This time he moved into gambit to prevent me from getting a gambit win as did I. We went 3 rounds with little to no action and Ferus was dropped to 40HP.

Round 4: I used Dark Temptation to put 40 on Chewie and then failed my save so Ferus flip-flopped to him. I set up the disrupted Han shot to kill Ferus and succeeded. The downside was that Han was out in the open, he only took 20 damage on that round but it was enough. I could not make the evade save I needed to make. Round 4 ends and I know that if I win initiative that this game is mine.

Round 5: He won initiative and went first with an ERC. I needed either one of those to miss, or I needed to make one evade save. First attack he shoots and hits, I roll a 6 on the evade, Han at 20HP remaining. He takes the 2nd twin and hits, I am praying even more so for this save than I was for the Juno save. I failed the save and he took a 50-37 lead. The gap was too great to breach in 6 minutes and I conceded. Had I won initiative or made one of those two saves, Han runs around the corner and I win by time, and move into the final game, but such is my luck.

What I Learned:

The big thing I learned from playing Ian twice and to a degree the others is that I need to start running more aggressive builds that don’t force me to sit back and glide to a 39-38 win or a 50-37 loss. I discovered that I don’t necessarily like running mass tempo, though at times it came in handy. Expect to see Republic, Imperial (Non-Ozzel), Old Republic, and Separatist (Non-San) squads from me in the future on vassal so that I can better learn how to run more aggressively.

I want to send out a big thanks to Jim for hosting us and opening his home for both Andy and myself to stay in, it is greatly appreciated. I also send a big thanks to Charlie for hosting the regional on such short notice. I enjoyed meeting everyone, and putting a lot of names to faces here on Bloomilk. I am totally thrilled that I won the GenCon pass and I am looking foward to meeting even more people there.

My wife has asked that I not identify my real name with my screen name.

This was a great player group and the event was a lot of fun (once you got over the sardine feeling) despite all the walls that had to be over come. Thank you to all that organized this event, and to the players for making it a great experience.

The tournament was a wonderful experience.
I had my doubts going in, the original location closing down, and finding out the size of the space we were going to be playing in. I really have to applaud Jim. All the problems setting this thing up, and then the issues that popped up on game day would been enough to put myself on edge. But Jim had nothing less than a smile for everyone all day. We had a very small amount of ruling issues that Jim took care of neatly and cleanly. All things considered, it went very smooth and I think you deserve most of the credit for that Jim. Your demeanor set the mood for the day. Thanks for all the effort you put into this.
I'd also like to say a big thank you to the store owner, Charlie; Matt for hooking us up with some great new maps to play on; everyone I beat for not being a sore loser (even though I might have been  ), and everyone who beat me for not rubbing it in ;). Last but not least, I'd like to give a shout out to Rusty for driving the 4 of us up there from VA...about 2.5-3 hrs each way.

Ok, now to the details.
I placed 4th with the 6 activation GMLS squad. The whole point of my squad was to nerf activation control and high activation squads with a super aggressive strategy, hard to kill disruptive, high defense and a lot of hit points. My plan was that all my games would finish before time. It worked, even when I lost it happened pretty fast. Most of my games ended within 1/2 hr.

1st round
vs Jordan Graham
He won map - Rravaged Base - I chose outside.
We both had Ganner and disruptive. He managed to get Kyle JBM up on me pretty quick, but unfortunately with the help of an initiative, Kyle went out without taking a swing. After that it was just clean-up, although my Kyle did have to re-roll both of his attacks to take out one of his TBSVs...I only needed 5's!! (this would be indicative of my rolls all day). 1-0 3pts.

2nd round
vs Ed Peters
He won map - Invisible Hand - I chose landing bay side.
He got a couple of shots off early with the beefed up 501st troopers, but once Kyle based his commanders (Vader and Veers, while Thrawn and Lando were within a couple squares) Luke handled them w/out a problem. I did end up losing Kyle, but it was too late by then. 2-0 6pts.

3rd round
vs Bob Fissel
He won map - Rancor Pit - I chose the side with the small rooms.
We both had GMLS so I was interested to see how it would play out. We got everyone in or near the gambit zone by the end of round 2 (gotta love all mele squads). I was able to knock out Kyp in that round so I figured next round it'd be safe to do the Djem So battle. My Luke walked away with 10hp, his didn't (he couldn't make the saves towards the end). 3-0 9pts.

4th round
vs Roy Scales
I won map - Cloud City - he chose inside
We both new we would have to face each other when we started planning to attend about 2 months ago. This was the match-up I was dreading. I still can't believe he didn't do a whole lot better with the squad he was running. I got into the middle room in the second round, Ganner died that round thanks to Cad Bane swapping into the door I had to open with my uggie. The next round Kyle died (Cad Bane again) but Luke was able to take out Bane. Too little too late. Luke didn't feel like making his saves with both his buddies gone, and the loss of Cad Bane seemed to bring out the best in Jarael. I did take out Kir Kanos before the end. I lost fast and hard. 3-1 9pts.

5th round
vs Marcous Morton
I won map - Cloud City - He chose inside
He had a similar squad so I focused on taking out Cade and Kyle before going toe-to-toe w/his GMLS. His Luke died in the encounter and mine finished with 40hp. 4-1 12pts.

Into the playoffs.
vs Ted Peck
He won map - Ravaged Base - I chose inside
By the end of the 2nd round we were both in gambit and neither of us had been able to take a shot or a swing. The 3rd round is where I went completely stupid. I guess it was going too slow for me. I decided to get Kyle and Luke up into his squad. But I gave him a twin AoO with the TBSV against Kyle, and miscounted with Luke and didn't even get a swing off with him. Then I forgot about the jolt from Han the next round and spent a FP to defense the damage. Then I couldn't make the jolt save with 2 chances. So Luke stood still for a round while Dash, Jarael, and Leia took out Kyle and started in on Ganner. Luke again decided life wasn't worth it with both his buddies gone and refused to make any saves. For the second time Luke fell to Jarael.

I had a blast. I was very nervous about bringing a 6 activation squad to regionals but I can't complain about coming in 4th.
Huge props to all the guys that showed up for great gamesmanship. Like Jim said, only a few choice words were herd because of dice rolls (some by me) but other than that we had a very laid-back easy-going atmosphere.
Congrats Ian - you did it with Chewie just like you set out to. But I can't wait to wipe that grin off your face in 2 weeks :D

I may not be able to comment on what happened up there, I need to mention something.
Jim and I basically got to know one another last year at Gencon due to his friend Ruben realizing that we both used to play the Star Wars CCG over 10 years beforehand down in Springfield, Missouri. I talked to Jim a few times over the course of the events, and that was basically it.
Then, when Jim started trying to organize his Regional, and then I took over, we started to talk quite often. He just had general questions, and I was perfectly happy to help out.
However, once the original location shut down, then we started to talk much more frequently about where to go from there. That part is history now, but I believe that Jim went above and beyond to make sure you guys were going to have a great event (same attendance as Missouri, however, I miscounted!) Jim, i consider you a good friend, and you did a fabulous job!

Post subject:  Re: Pa-Md Regional Results

Hey guys, sorry I haven't posted earlier. I just got around to creating my SWMGamers.com account.

Anyways, for those of you who don't know who I am, my name is Ian (yup, the guys who won the PA-MD Regional). Let me first say that I had a great time gaming with everyone. I was glad to have the support of my buddies who showed up with me to participate in the tournament. I really must thank Roy Scales and Kris Soehnlin. The three of us helped each other out gearing up for this event.

To be honest to everyone, the only reason why I ran Chewbacca Fearless Scout was because our gaming group said that there wasn't a playable version of the lovable wookie. Well, I couldn't let that statement go unanswered. So I made a vow to make a competitive squad using the walking carpet. Even though I won the tournament, it was no easy journey.

The first round, I won map roll. At one point, I was forced to throw my entire squad at Mara Jade Jedi when she was levitated in and killed my Han Solo, Smuggler. I got lucky and pretty much hit with every shot and also Mara failed a LS Block save against Luke, Rebel Commando. I think I remember only winning that game by 3 points. My opponent, Evan I believe his name was, played a very aggressive and smart game.

Second round won map roll again, and had me facing another NR squad with both Kyle Katarn Jedi Battlemaster and Mara Jade Jedi. I knew that I had to concentrate on one of those two figures and decided that it would be Kyle. Having a piece with Disruptive running in the middle of anyone's squad tends to throw a wrench in the works. I ended up losing Crix Madine (who I ran up as a sacrifice to negate Kyle's Evades), Commando Luke, and Obi Force Spirit. Eventually I was able to bring down Kyle (which also got rid of Luke Force Spirit who was ghosted to Kyle).

Third round was against Treebeard's separatists. He won map roll, but decided to use my map. The one figure I was really worried about was Zuckuss because of the Snare Rifle. I managed to run Chewy onto Gambit turn one and was able to keep him there the entire game. I put an early 40 damage on his Boba Fett Merc, but was unable to take anymore shots on him for the rest of the skirmish. Boba managed to roll a crit with Cunning against one of my ERCs, but my Evade was successful. I only ended up killing an Aqualish Assasin, an R7 Astromech, and an uggy I think. The only mistake that Treebeard made was that he completely forgot to use Force Sense with Zuckuss. Treebeard also had two IG-86s, but unfortunately I don't think they made a single shot the entire game.

Fourth round had my squad against Matt's rebels. I won map roll, and decided to use my map. As he mentioned earlier, it was a slow game. He lost Ferrus Olin, and R7, and an uggy or mouse droid. He ended up killing an ERC and a mouse droid while collecting enough gambit to put him ahead by one when the game ended. I just couldn't believe how horrible my dice rolls were. I could make an Evade save even if I had loaded dice while Matt I think only missed one save out of about a dozen or so. But that's part of the game and had to salt my wounds.

I was kind of bummed out about losing the 4th round, and didn't even think that I was in any position to get into the final 4. However, I decided to keep playing. Low and behold, I play my good friend Roy. I win map roll and decide to use his map (Ruined Base). I was able to get to Gambit in the first turn and stay there the rest of the game. Roy made a critical error with Jareal when he ran he next to Chewy and then expecting to swap her out with Kir Kanos. Unfortunately, he forgot that Crix Madine had Disruptive and was within 6 squares to prevent that from happening. So he had to swap a Rodian Brute out instead and then ran Kir Kanos in the room where my squad was waiting. I was able to kill Kir Kanos that round follow by Jareal the next. My next target was Cad Bane. I had two opprotunities to base Cad with my ERCs and get Cunning attack off in the course of the game. The first time I did, I missed with both my shots needing 8s to hit (for some reason, I have a history missing just about every roll that needs a 7 or 8). The second time, I do manage to hit both times putting 60 on him. Both the ERC die ofcourse, but this later sets me up by levitating Leia of Cloud City to base Cad Bane. I figure she was my best chance of killing him needing an 11 to hit with a reroll. Sadly, I miss and Leia goes down. Despite losing both my ERC and Leia, I sill accumulated enough points to win the game.

After winning, Jim gives me the news that I'm in the final 4. Apparently, the stars aligned just right while pigs learned to fly; so yeah, I was kind of speechless. So, in the next round, I have a rematch against Matt again. Once again, I win map roll and choose mine. This game was night and day compared to the first match. I guess I was just building up karma because I couldn't fail a save and seemed to be hitting with everything. Matt, on the other hand, had the untimely change in luck and couldn't make an Evade. He did a smart thing and use "Dark Temptation" with Ferrus Olin to put 40 damage on Chewy. He then fails the save to have him switch sides. Matt took a huge gamble and ran Han out in the open to put a shot on Ferrus while being disrupted by Juno. He managed to kill Ferrus easily, but then his luck took a turn for the worse. My Han took out his Juno which allowed Chewy to hit Matt's Han. I ran an ERC far enough up in a position to shoot at Han if I won innitiative. Luckily, I won the roll and was able to hit with both my Cunning attacks and Han couldn't make either of his Evades. After Han was defeated, the only decent/good shooters Matt had left was Princess Leia and Dengar. But the only pieces that he could draw line of sight to had Stealth, and all his pieces where too far away to get within 6 squares. So we decided to call the game with about 15 minutes left.

The Championship game had my face Ted and his NR squad. I won map roll and decided to use his map (Ruined Base). He chose to setup inside. I tried to get as many people in the room on the other side of the elevators where you can collect Gambit. Both of us got to Gambit turn 1 and did more manuvering turn 2. However, once Ted was done with all his pieces, I was able to Levitate Han down the main hallway into a spot to put a shot on Lobot and kill him. Then backed Han off and I locked the door with an ERC. My other ERC was holding the other door leading into my room shut. This put Ted in a tough position having lost half his Override and no one with Satchel Charge. Next turn, Ted Override the door in the main hall open to run Jareal next to Han and put 10 damage on him (Han made his activation save however). So my Bothan Noble lets Han shoot, but Han missed with a 3. Then Han shoots on his own and misses again with a 4 (apparently, he doesn't like hitting girls). Jareal manage to stay alive at the end of the game with 10 HP left. Ted did manage to kill Crix Madine with Han Solo Galactic Hero, but those where the only two shots Han made the entire game. Kind of anti-climactic I know, but I still had a fun time.

As much as I would like to go to GENCON for Nationals, I only have the time to go to either GENCON or to the 30 year Empire Strikes Back celebration. GENCON isn't going away short or the world being destroyed, so I decided to go to the celebration event in Orlando.

I would like to congratulate everyone who showed up to Regionals, but most importantly Jim. He had to do some last minute scrambling to salvage any chance of having a tournament for the rest of us. My hat goes off to you Jim, and may the future give you great fortune!!

I was also glad to finally meet the man behind the curtain of Jedi Cartographer. Here is a guy that goes out of his way to make a great game that much more enjoyable. If you're reading this Matt, you ROCK!!! I really need to visit your store next time I go down to VA Beach.

It was good to see different people from the different areas of our country that are keeping SWM alive and kicking. Let's keep that truck a rollin' fellas!! Good luck to all of you who go to Nationals, and may the force be with you! Cheers!

Sincerely,
Jester007

Ian - I was the one who played you in the first round (name's Justin ;) ) and it was a 1-point victory. Curses for not running Ganner up into Gambit in the first round!
