Sunday June 6th All Things Fun in West Berlin New Jersey hosted the New Jersey Star Wars Miniatures GenCon 2010 Regional tournament. We had less of a turnout than expected but still a respectable showing of 11 players to compete.

Unfortunately due to some concerns about time constrictions due to restricted store hours we were limited to playing 45 minute rounds in order to get the whole tournament finished within the time constraints of the store. As a result an executive decision was made regarding the 2 point/3 point win scheme that if 75% of victory points were achieved by the end of the tournament the winner would be granted a full 3 point win.

The players were all very respectful of each others time and we had little to no issue with slow play during any of the rounds. Everyone seemed to have a pleasant time and the tournament as a whole went off without much of a problem.

None of our top four winners were either unable to use or uninterested in using the GenCon badge. As much as I would have liked to have had a Regional winner from our tournament playing at GenCon (if just for bragging rights) it was not to come to pass. I did not seem fair to me to pass the top prize below the highest placed players in the tournament, so as a result we converted all of the entrance fee money into prize support and we were able to distribute the equivalent of a full case (12 boosters) from various sets to the top four players. I hope this was amicable to all those involved and I wish we could have had more prize support but several avenues I had lined up for additional support never panned out. A big thanks to Dean for his help with the Dark Troopers that we were able to hand out to all registrants and some extras for some extra-ordinary play.

We played four rounds of Swiss play, unfortunately having to have a bye in each round due to the odd number of players. After the Swiss rounds we pulled the top 4 players based on the tournament points to play a semi-final round. We were very fortunate in that it was a clear break down of the top four players. From the semi final round we moved into the final championship round.

In an attempt to preserve peoples privacy I used only first name and last initial. If anyone would like this changed for privacy reasons or replaced with your online user name please let me know. I apologize in advance for the crude nature of the break down. I'm afraid I didn't have time to do more than a stat break down of the rounds and games. I lacked the time to do play by play or recount specific events from the tournament. Hopefully this break down should be sufficient, it includes each game, each round and squad break downs.

Now...on to the results.

Just one correction that I can see: In Round 1, Game 1, I'm listed as being defeated by Ed P. when, in fact, I defeated him. That's the only problem I see - it's a great overview, and I look forward to compiling my own play report soon. Also, could you add my online username next to my name (Justin W)? Thanks, and thanks so much for judging, it was tons of fun!

Sorry about that, corrections made as requested. I guess that's what I get for trying to do it quickly at work while juggling three other things :)

I'm glad you guys were able to come up and play and have a good time. My only regret is that I didn't get to play any of you guys. Maybe we can arrange a field trip with some of my guys at some point over the summer so we can come down and play at your venue.

You can add my username next to my name. (Stephen C.)

I think you mean "all of our top four...", and I believe that Mike J.'s squad had Leia Organa, Senator, not Leia Organa Solo.

I had a great time playing with you all at All Things Fun. My brother and I rarely have the pleasure of playing other veteran players, and we enjoyed the time immensely. If there are regionals held at the same location next year, you can be sure we will be there.

Thanks for the input and proof reading, I think I got all the updates into the original post. I'm not entirely sure where the "all of our top four" changed needed to go so if that's still a mistake please let me know.

I'm glad you guys were able to come down. Hopefully next year I'll actually get to play against some of you guys. It's always nice having fresh competition to play against.

Congrats again on the win!

So this is how my Regionals went. I don't remember a lot of the specifics, since it was over a week ago, but I'll try my best to get the highlights in there. The squad I ran was:

--Blunt Force Trauma--
115 Grand Master Luke Skywalker
29 Ganner Rhysode
26 Kyp Durron
9 General Dodonna
8 R7 Astromech Droid
12 Ugnaught Demolitionist x4
(9 activations, 199 points)

The main reason I went with this squad was because I thought I was going to see a lot of Lancer squads. Just my luck - there wasn't a Lancer in sight at Regionals! Ah well, it still was a lot of fun running this squad. Not a whole lot of tech, just straight-up smash-mouth damage. Capability of levitating GMLS in for his Triple/Twin, or Kyp for the Force Push 5.

Round 1 vs. Ed P.
Map: Rancor Pit

So my first match of the day is against Ed P., whom I also played at the PA-MD Regionals. He's running a Grievous DAC squad with 3 Chameleon Droids and a bunch of Battle Droids. I start off on the side that has the little enclosed pen area (forget the name) and advance pretty carefully and slowly. My ugnaughts don't really do much in this match-up, so they just run up behind the central wall to get into position for maybe taking out some Battle Droids. Ganner uses a FP to move up 14 and into Gambit first round. The next few rounds, Kyp takes a pounding from Ed's twinning Battle Droids, and eventually dies without doing any damage (a theme for the rest of the day, I assure you). Ed positions the Cham Droids in a triangle, non-adjacent to each other, and I decide to levitate GMLS into position adjacent to the first two Cham Droids. He makes his mines save, and gets off 6 attacks on the Droids, killing one of them. Ganner takes a few licks as well, but hangs tough. Next round, Ganner levitates GMLS adjacent to the two surviving Cham Droids, and he takes out both of them. The whole while, GMLS is taking a beating. Dodonna pops out from behind a wall and takes out a Battle Droid. In the Final Round, I take out a couple more Battle Droids while Grievous and Gha Nachkt position to take some shots on GMLS. The round ends with Dodonna killing another Battle Droid, and then Gha Nachkt needing to crit to kill GMLS (who has 0 FP and 20 HP left), and he missed. Game goes to me, narrowly! 1-0, 2 points

Round 2 vs. Evan S.
Map: Jedi Temple (I think)

Evan is running a Rebel squad with Luke RC, Han Smuggler, Dengar, Juno, and other stuffs. Not gonna be a long report on this one, since not much happened. We were both extremely careful with our positioning, not wanting to give up any free shots. In the end, the only things to die are two of my ugnaughts, thanks to Juno, and we both have equal gambit. Evan wins. 1-1, 2 points.

Round 3 vs. Sergio
Map: Jedi Temple

Sergio is running a Republic squad with Rex, Bacara, Jolee, Mothma, and Elite Clone Troopers. I make a really bad positioning mistake in the second round and Rex takes out Ganner, effectively neutralizing much of the offensive potential of my squad. Kyp and GMLS spend the rest of the match trying to catch up to some of his pieces, but to no avail. Sergio wins. 1-2, 2 points.

Round 4 vs. Mike
Map: Ravaged Base (I think)

Mike is running a Rebel Push squad with VAR, Luke HPU, new IG-88, and Yoda of Dagobah. Wow, this match really should have gone the other way, lol. Second round, Kyp is levitated adjacet to VAR and Luke HPU, and is summarily pushed by both of them. All he can do in his activation is run up and use Lightning on someone for 20 damage before he bites the dust. At first, I thought this was a really bad omen. Turns out, them using those FPs would help me out later. Next round I levitate GMLS adjacent to them and take out Luke HPU, I believe, and fend off shots from the rest of his squad. GMLS proceeds to tear through VAR, then Yoda, then IG-88, making key Pulse Cannon saves and doing his best to spend everyone's FPs so VAR can't get his Force Push off. Very good rolling on my part and a lack of Force Points dooms Mike. I win, total kill victory! 2-2, 5 points

Overall Finish: 5th place out of 11

Overall, I think the squad was solid, I just need to learn how to use Kyp more effectively. He only did 20 damage the entire Tournament, and if I had gotten off his FP5 in a couple of those matches, I could have ended up in the Playoffs. Ah well, practice makes perfect!
