ALright so after doing the Epic Duos tournament at gen con this year and seeing all of the pieces, my wife, Myself and a few friends of mine came up with a format. Epic Skirmishes 300- 400 pt matches(we havnt tested which works best yet). The rules we have come up with so far are as follows:
1. Faction Rules Apply
2. You must use 1 Epic Piece. You may only use 1 Epic Piece
3. Gambit is normal placement, but you must have at least a 10 pt piece in the area to gain the points.
4. Commanders may not limit activations to 1.

So far we have just a good basis, but have not had the chance to playtest it. It would be similar to the Epic skirmishes that DND miniatures used to do. I welcome any ideas and sugestions. It would be very interesting and fun to see them do something like this at gen con. I would think that you would have to have a little longer than a 1 hour time limit, but if we limit the number of activations 10 20 or less or something balanced, than it could be interesting. LEt me know if you have any ides to help ballance this format. thanks in advance

I'd highly recommend a character limit.

+1 to Dennis' comment.

Also, I suggest raising the amount gambit is worth. If you are going to play with a time limit, a 5pt gambit isnt a huge reason to go out and engage, opposed getting a good lead and then turtling.

i like the idea of a character limit. i think around 16 encourages others to not try to have 20 mouse droids

IMHO, unless you're doing a trooper-centric battle (which is more of a mass-battle thing anyway), I think this is one of the most important rules you can establish for an Epic format. Going against a squad of 40 pieces in a skirmish format is slightly more than annoying.

Agree.

It would be best to make a clear distinction between "Epic format" and Mass Battle, as the latter could easily come to mind for some people when they see the moniker "Epic". This format is epic in power, not necessarily numbers. :mj:

Pondering...if there is "Epic", what is "Ultimate"? (perhaps better answered after another dozen v-sets, lol)

A 500pt fig? Yikes. I think Ruhk built a Zillo Beast character (from the TV show) a few months ago. Something like that might be an indication of what we'd be looking at for a 500pt piece.

One option for a 500pt fig is a special ability that DDM had:

Dual Activation: This character can activate twice (rather than once) each round.

That SA could add a whole new level of power to the uber-powerful characters that we'd be seeing at that point cost.

The 500 came from the "ultimate" statement. Epics are between 100 and 200, so how high would these cost? But I can already think of one that I would lke to see...we have a young krayt dragon, how about an ancient/elder one?

i think i am actualy trying 500 pt with the same limitations. IT is actualy quite inetesting. We implemented a strict 3 commander Rule (At the start of the Skirmish), and a 16 unit limit. We havnt tried it yet with multiple epics. You can actualy get multiple in in all the factions with the Terenterek. Also sith, Imperial, Seperatist, and republic all can have 2 epics per faction. reserves/Reinforcements dont count either. IN this high a format if you are trying to fill up points using gha nahct and mouse droids than you are just wasting your time.

What have I started with that "Ultimate" comment?

Nice one Dennis.

Make the build total 1000 points, maybe 24 acts or so. Be sure to pack a lunch. :P

Oh come on, thats totally overcosted. For 500 points, he better have VCA2 and Jedi Hunter at least.

Edit: Not to be spoilerific, but I think he ought to have some kind of ability that says he cannot be in the same squad with Darth Revan, Darth Bane, or Darth Nihilus. IIRC, those were the three.

We've already written the rules we are planning to PT for the future format. Dennis should add what I forget, but here they are.

Epic Format
500pts
16 max activations (reinforcements and reserves can break this limit)
1 Epic Minimum (as of right now you will be allowed to play 2 if you want)
Max 3 Commanders including the Epic character
1 hour rounds for tournament play
Standard Map List
