It was a great event, with a spectacular turnout!

It was not my day however lol. It started out bad, had some funny moments, and some down right laughable ones. Here's the rundown of my sub par performance.

My squad was easy, GOWK, JWM, Lobot, R2, Caamasi, Dash.

1st round was against Jonny playing his Gungans, I won map and chose my map - Bespin. He chose the inside. I had to give him something to shoot on the approach, so I gave him R2, which wasn't a huge deal for what I was planning to do. After that, I was able to charge in with Obi, JWM and Dash, but due to a very poor rolling, Dash took 40 from one double Cesta, and Obi took 60 from 2 double Cestas, at the expense of 4FPs. That's right, I failed double mettle twice, you know, 98.5% chance lol.

Anyways, I based 3 Gungans with Obi, attacked one, the others took aoos, and cestaed. Obi started making some saves here, but was still burning up the force. 3 times in this next could of exchanges, Jonny Cestaed himself while Obi was basing it, only to make both saves himself and live an extra round. In the mean time, I picked off his R2 with my Jawa Scavenger, and his Rex moved up to not only hit Dash, but kill him outright because his +12 hit my 23 in cover, and of course, I failed both saves. In the meantime, the JWM and Obi killed all but 2 Gungans and Tarpals, and the JWM finally died as well. So now I'm down to Obi with like 40hps left. I move up to base a Gungan, hit it, and he cestas himself, finally fails a save and dies, but so do I, so I FP it, down to 1fp. Rex moved up, shoots 4 times, no cover and kills Obi. Not great odds, needed 10s to hit (hit them all) and I just couldn't make the saves.

It was a rough start, and we knew they weren't doing a playoff (as any competitive tournament should always do), so Bill was already out of it. I failed somewhere around 80% saves, and that's just death against Gungans. I would put this match up on my map as an 80% win ratio for Obi, maybe higher, but today I hit the 20% :) If I had even had 40% saves, I would have been able to pull it off.

So, on to round two. Not much to say, my opponent had Kyp, Mara, Wedge, Kyle (UH) and one ugo. He was using Crystophis. I killed his ug first round, then locked him out. I opened the door at the end of the rounds, killed fodder, and locked it. Did this until he ran Kyp up to the door, then I opened it and killed him. Then the great moment came. His Mara was haunted, so he ran her to the door, but forgot to move Luke with her. So she was 3 from the pit. I opened the door, pushed her into the pit, and she failed both saves. MAra Jade, Jed, full health, 10FPs, dead :)

Round 3 was against Vader U, Palps on Throne, 5 Stormies, 3 Shadow Storms, and some ugos. We played on Bespin, I had the inside. I brought Wicket this game (only time I didn't bring the Jawa Scavenger). At the end of round 2, I had a chance to opp on Palps safetly, so I moved up to base, and hit 1/4. That hurt. So I mobiled away. I was playing kinda casually this game, and this costs me later. I position to take out some of his ugs, and keep using my door control and caamasi in base with palps to keep him under control. So next round, I tow Dash and am intending to attack with Dash. So I tow him back in adjacent. Then I remember he hasn't activated, so I decide not to attack and do something else and he says, "Lightning on Dash" and I'm sitting there looking dumb, totally forgetting that I didn't replace Dash back one when I changed my mind. So dead R2, and Dash takes 40 (not that big of a deal at this point, but it's critical later). So basically, but this time, Vader has worked his way around the doors, and it's time to take him on. Wicket and my ugos and the JWM and Obi had been taking out the stormies and Shadows, and all but one each were left. Obi had taken 40 from a grip at one point. So after Vader moves up to a door, I have a chance to hit with all three of my figs on Vader. Dash moves up, misses all but 1 again. Obi hits, and JWM hits, so Vader to 80. Next round I lose init, and Dash gets gripped to death, I attack, Obi hits twice, JWM goes for the kill (traps, obi CE, +20 vs 23), 1, 2, 1. I lose init again, Vader grips Obi, Obi hits back and hits once. JWM misses twice again, 1, 1. Next round, lose init again, Obi gripped to death, Vader takes the aoo, now JWM needs 7 (traps) to kill Vader, miss. He moves past a 10hp shadow (wicket put 10 on last round), so I have to kill the shadow to get to Vader. Wicket attacks, misses (10 on 16). JWM has to attack it, misses. JWM is still at 80hps, so I am still ok. Next round, take the AoO to get to Vader, crit, takes 40, move up to Vader, miss. Vader grips me and I have one last chance now. If I win init, I can double and odds are I can kill Vader. I lose init, get gripped and that's game.

Uggly game, that I played too loose on, but still had a good chance at winning, even against a "counter GOWK squad".

In the same round, Lobostele lost to Vong as he failed like 12 straight saves or something ridiculous.

Round 4 - I play a Rebel push squad on Death star. Pretty much goes to plan, as I sac R2 to get to Luke, take Luke to 20, JWM moves in, I decide to sweep against my better judgment, forgetting I was disrupted, and sure enough, fail to kill Luke. But I still have enough, even with that, to take out Luke and Obi U, leaving T3 and Han Smug vs my 6 acts and Dash at full. I use ugs to harrass Han, t3 chases my lobot, and Dash sets up to kill Han. I set Han up to kill Lobot (leaves Han where Dash needed him) and kill Han to win.

Round 5 - Vong JHs on Bespin. Basically I killed his door control (Jawa Scavenger corner to corner shot, through 5 doors lol. And then never leave the starting area with most of my pieces. Jawa and Dash were mvps, JWM was an expensive door opener, did the last 10 to one JH, took 60 for his troubles, and then he ran for the edge lol. Total cat and mouse game. I was able to lock him out at one point, but for fun we played it out, and I still won.

Round 6 - GOWK, Qui-Gon, Jarael, Jar Jar R2, acts. Basically, I killed his door control in the first 2 rounds, killed Jarael and then used override to keep Obi away. I took the attacks I could on Qui-gon, and whittled him down. Finally he runs through the vent shaft (Bespin again) and comes up to attack. I stick Obi right in front of the door, attack, he and Dash kill Qui, leaving GOWK at full with 12FPs, and JarJar. He moves up Obi and Jar to attack my Obi, I take 20. Of course at this point, they are both in the vent shaft, and I have double override. So, I lock one with R2, and lobot moves to the other door and locks them in for the win.

So all in all, a great event and a lot of fun. I am not going to do full Obi analysis here, as I didn't see anything different than what I have already said, or what I have predicted, but I will say this.

TimmerB, who won it, played Obi at least 2X, maybe 3, and every time he had one strategy, kill everything else, then run. And since he had the Snowspeeder, with Reeikan, Dodonna, and like 13 acts or something, he could usually get away. I think in 3 games, his speeder ended with like 10hps left, and the opponent would run his beat up, catch it, play for init, lose it, and the speeder would get away. It happened like that several times that I saw. It was a great strategy, and for that he is a regional winner. But I point this one thing out to you. The entire strategy is based on the fact that an otherwise great squad, cannot kill Obi. He is simply banking on outpointing you and running every game. That really ought to tell you something about the problem.

First game was against Bill
Bill just couldnt save for his life and my dice were really really hot. I really couldnt stop GOWK from coming in my room my dice just helped me out.
1-0

Vs a Kyp Kyle
The player was new I was able to tow rex and kill dod and a mouse on turn 2 since on turn 1 i missed dod. He moved Kyp to the inside of ravaged base he made 18 saves in a row with kyp but he finally went down. Rex later in the game was able to get towed and kill wedge. He ran kyle in a room to kill a gungan. I didnt feel like seeing if he could make 30 more saves in a row so i towed r2 and locked the door. I was in gambit and had a big lead. So that was that game.
2-0

Vs a rebel push (var, luke hoth and Yoda)
We played on my map Taris. He was able to just sit in the room on the right. turn 4 the score was 10-6. I was going to move a uggie in gambit but I gave him a Gungan as bait just to see if he would take it since next round i would of been about to try and kill rieekan since he was at 30. So he moved Luke up killed the Gungan killed door. I reopened it and killed luke r2 and dod. Now he had to run at me. I had 3 gungans rex and r2 with the point lead. It was a hard game and I thought i was done for since i had some gungans up front and they could die when the score was 10-6 him. But the Gungan bait payed off.
3-0

Vs another rebel push but with Obi UL, han Smugger, princess leia, and luke of hoth. No r2 or Dod.
I won map. He took the right again. I was able to tow a gunagan open the closed room and cesta like 4 pieces killing a mouse and juno. At this point it was still turn 1 but he wanted to run at me so he tried to run at me but i was able to tow in rex to kill han. Rex took the push which I was hoping for and ran away with 10 hps. There were just too many cesta saves to make. I was able to kill everything
4-0

Vs Vigos
He won map but i defered side(rancor). He setup on the left but he had ozzel so i was able to move a uggie up to the right room opening it. he just acted ozzel and commanders like most people do. He didnt see i could cesta his jarael which and xizor 2 vigos next to her. I was able to put 40 on xizor,2O on one of the vigos and 40 on jarael. He moved Jarael but i Still had sight on her but He moved a vigo to and I found some crazy los for rex to hit him with 20 with. The next round I was able to kill uggies and tow in rex to kill his vigo and crezka. He still had one vigo left. He won init doubled my rex he hit once but I maded the Jolt save so I towed up rex and killed his Vigo. At this point it was just commanders vs my rex and crew. The game went two more rounds because i had to get my gungans in position to hit.
5-0

Vs Tim
We both bad taris. I took the right side. He was able to just move up mice to gambit and win init moving them back. It was 20-0. I towed a gungan up to kill some mice but gave him r2 which really just lost me the game since he was able to just sit for 2-3 more rounds. I knew I couldnt win I just didnt have the movement to get to the speeder.I ran my pieces at him and said to myself his is a waste of time. So I conceded which I know in the finals is dumb but I had no shot. I just couldnt move with out dieing. He had 13 acts with Dod vs my 14. I am ok vs 8-9 act dod squads but 13 on taris is just bad for me.
5-1

Overall Gungans are great they get killed by tempo control on taris and vs a lancer or yodabuck swap. I didnt think I had the greatest SOS but I guess it was good enough to take second. Pastimes ran a great event with amazing prize support. Ted did a great job at judging. I had a great time.

Excellent event.

Lots of strong players attended and it highlighted some interesting match ups.

Timmerb123s (1st ) Reiken Speedy smuggler cannon got past 3 GOWK squad with the "kill everything but GOWK" strat. I lost to him in the semis and he used the same tactic. Killed kyp, vigo and dodonna. I was a triple from killing the speeder but Tims recon denied me the init.

Jons' Amidala led gungan squad was a great (serendipitous?) counter to the prevailing meta. Probably the most unique squad on the tables that had significant power. beat bill with nutz rolls and had a tough strength of schedule and got disheartened when he lost R2 against Timmer (the addition of towed Rex to help the gungans was well thought).
He couldn't stop laughing about it winning until he was in the 5th round. Good display jon, i recon you should get used to playing matches out. People make mistakes and fortunes can swing. Nevertheless awesome show coming 2nd in 2 regionals.

Matt (mtmagus) came 3rd with a consistent performance meeting Lobostele early with mirror squads. Don't know much of his games other than that but his SoS was high. Thats his 2nd 3rd place finish and having a record of 10-2 in the regionals.

I had the weakest of 5-1 finishers again avoiding the Gowk minefield and coming up against all manner of interesting counters.
I played CHUCK NORRIS and kyp (same squad as Lamalazar [bloomilk] and Daniel Stevens [atlanta regional] fame; Kyle BM haunted by Luke FS, Kyp, G wedge, TBSV, dodonna, uggies and mouse)

kyle is an absolute beast with Evade, FR and mettle. He is a bear on par with Gowk IMO when pumped (this squad basically pays 97 to give kyle a similar OMGWTFPWN jedi feel). Kyp suprised me. Choosing the correct targets helped.

1st guy was Captain Tym with his Obi U, Luke HPU, Smuggler, T4 squad.
Ravaged base, Got gambit 1st and holed up in the command center on the right. Kyle got pushed by Obi but Kyp went round the top and assaulted Han but missed one leaving Han with 10. Kyp got pushed and finally killed by Han as ObiU ran in to put more dmg on Kyle (this was a frantic barrage of attacks). Kyle (Triple and crit) and the Vigo finshed Obi U before he could do anything and then Luke started pushing. T3 flamed also leaving Kyle with 60, putting wedge to 40. Kyle got a long grip on Han as wedge died and the time rolled up.
Tym played really well, used Juno very effectively and was close to finishing kyle. However, with a points lead keeping kyle alive was Key. Disruptive was key on both sides of the game.

2nd game was Ted with Nom, Yomin and 9 scouts with an ooglithed YVJH, advance scout off and uggies + mice.
Ravaged base
This was a bad match for him. Hard to kill disruptive and enough activations to react to his movements. got 1st round gambit and then picked off the scouts as they got close. Kyle got bugged several times but his disruptive field won the game just by being present. Kyp, Wdege and the vigo (dodonna too!) cleared out the scouts. Finally Yomin fell and then Ted conceded.

Third game was a squad with great potential played by JR from Wisconsin,
A double Bothan Noble Boba BH cannon with Levitating Luke as support.
A pretty interesting map choice win corouscant. He won map so i took the side with the platform to avoid bobas puddle jumping. We set up on the bottom of the map both yieldin 1st (and even 2nd and 3rd gambit). JR started opening doors and i kept the door to the offices closed. John saw an opportunity to shoot but moved boba and got too close to Kyle. Kyle based and disrupted Boba). He won init and retreated but missed the shot on an uggie (1 evaded 2nd shot was a 3). This got Kyle an 8 square triple. Boba was levitated but the vigo jolted a bothan so Kyle took 20. An assaulting crit finished boba and then the game was mop up after that. Disruptive again shut his squad down and allowed the Kyle to play hyper aggressive.

4th game was against a Vader unleashed, shadow stormtrooper, emp on toilet that had just beat bills gowk squad due to a spate of 8 rolls below a 5. The placement of Emperor was poor as on the ravaged base he holed up on the command center. Gambit was equal for the game so the battle happened in the corridor away from emperor. Soon kyle and vader went at it while the vigo, wedge and kyp took out many stormtroopers. Vader was disrupted from using the emperors force points so only got one grip before being battered. Kyle had about 40 left after the battle. The emperor cackled on his throne cotrobuting literally 0 to the battle.

5th Game was against Timmerb123.
His Map was Taris. I started left and set up advancing by the fence. He was holed behind the wall and fired a mouse into gambit. in sniped the mouse and ran up to the crashed Ship with kyle and kyp taking 2nd round gambit. the speeder bade kyp and gambit prevented a leia extra attack. However, tim won init and shot and crit on Kyp killing him. The rest of the game was Kyle chasing the speeder while it killed the Vigo and Juno killed dodonna with Leia s Ce. there was one init where the Speeder had 60 left, it had just missed the kill shot on the vigo and kyle was based to it with greater mobile (i rolled an 18, he rolled a 17...........and then a 19) that kill would have put me even and was my best chance at victory but i didn't get it and felt thoroughly worked by the end. I have a inkling that 5 other players feel the same.

My last opponent Was Mike with Ozzel Lord Vader Miththrawn B&B.
He was exhausted after staying up all night trying different squads. The tourney was long and he got caught up trying to get around the kyle disruptive wall i put up using other figs to shield him. I kept picking off swappers until he chanced a leap assault missing poorly on wedge (2 3's) so only doing 40 dmg. Vader got boxed in and the disruptive pinned him. Kyle tripled from 4 away and the Vigo put a shot that went through his dark armor. Vader rage assaulted on kyle after init but only rolled 1 above 10 which Kyle riposted and then promptly battered Vader to death.
Mike Conceded.

5-1.

So that was my tourney. No Gowk, just lots of commander effect laden GOWK counters. A statistical wonder having 12 games with Gowk players present and performing but just missing them in the match ups.

Lou pulled a 5th place with GoBuck losing to Timmer but beating James (2x regional champ). He was 4-2 so i'm not sure what else did him in.

There were a few push squads after this that hold the 6 and 7 spots finishing the top 8 with an Ozzel B&B.

9th was Ted Picks Nom Spit swarm that i think did in a strongly run GOWK squad early on highlighting another team that by passes the attack and goes straight to saves (not rerollable either).

A bad day of fortunes left James, Bill and Lobo at 4-2.
Well, i lucked my way through another tourney but i have to say it was a blast. 37 at the tourney and a depth of talent means a well deserved badge for Timmer.
Final count at the end was about 31 so not too many drops.

Thanks to Ron, Jimmy and the bearded score keeper at Pastimes for hosting the tourney.
A big shout out to Ted the Mighty Mullet for judging a superbly smooth day of gaming.
Top job on the kalamazoo massive contributing to the field.

Sounds like a good time was had by all. Wish I could've made it -- oh well.

See you guys in August.

This thread seems awfully dead for what was probably a super competitive regional...no more thoughts / analysis of what could be around during GenCon from this?

I think you can take the top 4 squads/players from each regional and if GOWK is not banned, those are what you can expect to see win, for the most part. Might be a post-JA squad or 2 in the mix, but not enough to overwrite the comprehensive list.

Hopefully I'll be able to get more of a full report up later in the day, but work is quite busy today. And after driving back the 6 hours on Saturday night, then had a couple things going on yesterday, I was absolutely wiped. Didn't even feel awake enough to write up a tourney report, lol.

It will be coming. :D

All righty...here's my report for my games of the day. As a quick aside, I honestly didn't feel like this was a 'super competitive' regional as Cybit said. That's probably because I lost twice early though, and I ended up in the bottom half of the competition. The top tables seemed to be tougher opponents. But there really wasn't anybody at the top that I didn't expect to see up there, with maybe the exception of the guy that jew3 lost to in Round 1 with the other Rebel Push squad. That was apparently his first DCI tournament ever (according to comments on WOTC), but he played quite well, so he obviously has had practice otherwise. But outside of the 10-12 people I already knew and expected to see, I don't think there was much surprise about who ended up at the top.

Anyways...here's how my day went.

I kept toying back and forth with whether to play GOWK or something with the new Asajj, but I finally decided that this may be the last chance I get to play GOWK if he gets banned, so I went ahead and ran the same squad that I'd done well with at the other two regionals

GOWK
Dash RS
Lobot
JWM
R2-Doombot
Caamasi

My map of choice was again Bespin as well.

First round was against a guy who said he didn't get to play all that often. He was running Mandos with Canderous, 2 Scouts, Quartermaster, Captain, a couple Mouse Droids, a Caamasi, and an Ugnaught. This was a quick and dirty game. I took out the Ugo pretty early, and then killed the Mouse Droid that has hanging out near the Scouts. In addition, I out-activated him from the very beginning of the game, so it was tough for him overall. We were playing on his Ruined Base map, and he started Canderous away from his Scouts, so by the time Canderous got close to the action, I had eliminated both the Scouts. The Quartermaster and Captain finally joined the fray, and he managed to kill R2 with a Twin from the QM, but that was the only thing he killed. He conceded when he had only Canderous left, who had already taken 30 damage from a GOWK Force Push (to kill the Mouse Droid next to him as well). Lobo 1-0

As fate would have it, of course, I end up paired against MtMagus with the mirror match in Round 2. Figures. He went with all activations for his reinforcements, and I decided to go with the Human Bodyguard, which I think is what ended up hurting me the most in the end. It forced me to waste my Overrides earlier in the round, and then only be able to get one piece through the open door before he'd lock it closed again. On top of that, Matt was rolling hot, and I was not. On the first round, I used my GOWK to gain gambit, and he towed up his Dash at the end of the round, and landed all 4 shots, I had to burn 2 FPs on the SSM rolls, and still ended up taking 40 damage. I forced Matt to use a Force Push from his GOWK to take out my R2 and put 30 on my JWM, but it put 30 on his JWM as well. I then failed to get a couple of crucial hits in on his JWM, and it survived till the following round. Also, at one point, my Dash had to use all 4 shots to kill a Mouse Droid that wasn't even in cover (though it hadn't activated). Still though, I only needed a 10 to hit it, and it wasn't until the 4th roll that I finally got it (was trying to clear a path to his Dash/R2). I thought perhaps my luck had turned slightly toward the end when his Dash managed to hit my GOWK with all 4 shots (again!) and this time I managed to make the SSM saves. But it was too little, too late. My Dash stayed alive an extra round thanks to the Bodyguard, but by that point, he was doing little to help, not ever getting Opportunist, and even though I had both of Matt's GOWK and Dash pretty near death, the rolls were in his favor at the end, and he polished off both my GOWK and Dash before I could get either of his. Lobo 1-1

Third game was what really did me in. It was a bad match-up to start with, but from the time I sat down in the chair, everything just went down hill. I was facing Ted's Nom Bom squad, with Nom, Yomin, Adv Agent Officer, 1 Jedi Hunter, 2 Ugos, 2 Mouse Droids, and then a bunch of Scouts (like 8 or 9). I lost map roll, therefore losing my primary advantage, and having to play on his cover ridden Mos Eisley map. I got first round gambit, and started making him come to me. In the 2nd round I had an opportunity to take out two Scouts early, but I decided that Dash's activation might be better spent trying to take down the Mouse Droids, and make him lose his access to Spit Poison. Well, 4 shots later, and didn't hit a blasted thing. I protected well that round (had brought 5 Mouse Droids and a Caamasi with Reinforcements) so he couldn't hit me with Poison at all that round. But after that round, all bets were off. He won init, and started with a Thud Bug on GOWK that I made the save for. That would be the LAST save I would make the entire game. No joking. From there, it's too painful to even remember what happened. GOWK or the JWM took a couple Self Destruct blasts here or there to just take away the Thud Bug/Spit Poison chances for future rounds. Two different times, Dash picked off two pieces with Double without being based to either of them. But it didn't matter. Every round after that, either Dash or the JWM ended up getting stunned by Thud Bug, and then they would get shredded by Spit Poison. My rolls were so horrible that his Jedi Hunter never even had to do anything the entire game. Never made a single attack against GOWK. I think the JH finally killed one of my Mouse Droids in gambit, and that was all it did the whole game. I was hitting attacks for the most part (other than the Mouse Droid at the beginning), but there's just nothing you can do when you have a 95% fail rate on a 50/50 save. :( Lobo 1-2

From here on, the games weren't too bad. Fourth round was a guy trying the new Assaj with Durge JH, Aurra JH, and 5 Ugos. He had brought Echo Base Outpost for his map. He said after the game that he had hoped his squad would be good against GOWK, and I had to tell him that it wasn't necessarily that the squad didn't do well, he just didn't play it very wisely. In the first round, he decided to try advancing Durge and Aurra along the outside of the bunker. So naturally, since I out-activated him, I towed up Dash, and promptly put 60 damage on Durge. The second round, he he advanced Durge and Aurra a bit more, and moved Assaj up to the inside of the bunker. This time he leap frogged Aurra in front of Durge, so Dash put 60 on Aurra instead. He won the init, but I based my JWM against Asajj, and because he had moved some Ugnaughts up close as well, he wasn't getting Loner, and he missed 3 out of 4 hits on the JWM. GOWK and my JWM made short work of Assaj, while Aurra and Durge ran back behind the bunker and prepared to attack from that side instead. The next round, the JWM killed all the remaining Ugos with a Sweep, and then I Tow Cabled Dash up to wail on Durge, and then GOWK ran 12 to put the final hit on Durge. The next round, Aurra made a Blaster Barrage on GOWK and Dash, doing no damage, and then ran, to be quickly followed by R2/Dash for the kill. Lobo 2-2

Fifth round was against a guy running the same squad that fingersandteeth had, though obviously, FAT ran it much better, lol. We played on his Ruined Base map. I gained early gambit, and mostly sat and waited for him to come to me. Second round I towed Dash up along the top side (I had started on the outside), and shot down the long hallway to pick off an Ugnaught and his Mouse Droid. Then I positioned such that he couldn't set himself for a big Force Push from Kyp (he was haunted by Luke, instead of Kyle). The following round, he moved up Kyp to kill a Mouse Droid, forgetting that I could tow-cable Dash to base Kyp. My JWM then Assaulted Kyp, and Wicket hit Kyp as well, leaving him with 40. Kyle moved 8 to Triple the JWM, not doing much substantial damage though. Dash then came tow-cabling in, killing Kyp and putting 40 on Kyle as well. I then used GOWK to take the AoO from Kyle, and run out into the hallway to kill the last Ugo, and be a roadblock for Wedge and the TBSV. The following round he won init, chose to attack with the Vigo first, who missed anyways. Dash and the JWM made fairly quick work of Kyle at that point, and I could've just done a lock-out for the win at this point. But we played the game out, with the TBSV dying to a JWM Assault, and then Wedge dying from Dash's shots. Lobo 3-2

Final game was against a Vader Unleashed and Palps on Throne squad. He also had Mith''rawn, Ozzel, Mas, 3 Grans and an Ugo. We played on his Throne Room map, and I had decided to bring some Accurate in this game to deal with the Grans, so my Reinforcements were a Duros Scout, Wicket, and an extra Caamasi (just for you, Palpy!). The Duros paid off in Round 2 by sniping a Gran, and then staying alive when Thrawn rolled a 1 or a 2 trying to kill him. Round 2 I used Wicket to open the middle door of the map, and let Dash shoot at Palps some, even though he wasn't activated. Mostly just harrassing. Ended up being kind of dumb though, as Vader did a Throw 5 hitting Wicket and GOWK then. Luckily, GOWK didn't take any damage, but I did lose Wicket. However, it also put Vader fairly close to the rest of my squad. So the following round, GOWK ran 10 and based Vader, hitting once, then my Caamasi based Palps, neutering him for the rest of the game. The JWM also moved 8 and hit Vader once, and then I towed Dash up near Vader, and then ran around him, and killed the lone Ugo, then shot Vader with the reamining two shots. He swapped out Vader, and made a nice move by using LT5 to take out my R2 and hit both GOWK and the JWM, leaving the JWM at 30. But by then things weren't looking too hot. I killed theGran that had swapped in the next round with the Duros again, and began using Lobot to keep the rest of his squad at bay. The final Gran died while trying to get in the back door of the center room, and the Caamasi continued to keep Palpatine busy. He tried to start maneuvering his pieces around the map to come open a door that I hadn't locked, but once he got his pieces swung one direction, I changed the Override lock. Thrawn advanced far enough that Dash was able to come out and shoot him, but missed 2 shots, and I had to finish him off the next round. Once I started basing Palpatine with GOWK and the JWM, he started using Push some, but I quickly put enough damage on him that he couldn't risk using Lightning, and I was careful to keep pieces spread out so he couldn't hit more than one thing at a time. He finally got Vader around close to the center doors, and was frustrated that I was keeping him locked out. So once Palpatine was dead, I opened the door and wailed on Vader, finishing him off with ease. Lobo 4-2

So, overall, I had a pretty decent day. There's just not a whole lot you can do to overcome the lousy dice rolls though. There might've been a couple of different tactical things I could've done, but I still feel looking back like I either made the right decisions, or simply chose one option of two equal options. I don't feel like I made any mistakes. Just that Lady Luck was not on my side. But that's OK. I was just there for the fun and hanging out with friends and such, and I certainly got that. Thanks again to Bill for letting me crash (and dry off!) at his place the night before, along with the Olivet crew. That was a blast. It was great to see many people that I haven't seen since GenCon last year, or even since GenCon 2 years ago for some. Looking forward to seeing a lot of you again in 2 months! :D

Nah, it was all good. I was just glad that the tourney got over quick enough so that Tim was able to actually play his last game! He had to be somewhere else, and so before the tourney started, we were standing around joking that this would be the day he'll go undefeated and have to leave without being able to play his final game, haha.

We had also joked early in the day that me, Deri, or James Wys needed to win so that we could continue to add to the 'won more than one Regional' group. Guess we jinxed ourselves by talking about it. :P James and I were both out of the running by the 2nd round! Like you said though, Dean, didn't matter too much. We were just there to have fun!

Hello everyone,

For those that don't know me, my name is Tim, and I had the fortune of winning this thing.

Now that my brain isn't mush, like it was after the tournament, I can give my report. First off let me thank Ted and Pastimes for running such a smooth tournament. My fear was that I was not even going to be able to finish the tournament (I am an actor, and I had to leave by 6:15 to make it to my show.) Luckily, even with 6 rounds, it ran quick and smooth and I walked out the door at exactly 6:15, with prizes in hand (Still haven't opened the boosters!).

Thanks as well to Jonny B for taking the time to do the fabulous results write-up!

I also wanted to take a moment to thank all the players. What a great bunch of people! Everyone was so nice and friendly (I have rarely experienced otherwise in SWM, but it should still be acknowledged).

Onto the results.

For this tournament I ran Rieekan's speedy smuggler cannon: Luke's Snowspeeder, Han Solo Smuggler, Lobot (Universe), Princess Leia, General Rieekan, General Dodonna, Juno Eclipse.

We've seen similar squads do well before. Bill's (Billiv15) GenCon Master's winning speedy cannon squad is quick and powerful. Then Knights of the Old Republic brought us Han Smuggler. Great piece, but no evade, no mobile. The of course Imperial Entanglements brought us Rieekan (Holy cow!) and Mouse Droids (makes Princess Leia AWESOME!!!) Well, anyone that knows me could tell you I play best with tempo control. I love making the other player go first and then unleashing my fury. San Hill got me to 10th place at the GenCon championships 2 years ago. Ozzel has done me well. But with this squad - you throw in Dodonna and you have a fearsome team. You out-activate most squads, and have offensive punch too. You stay out of sight most of the time with squad wide mobile, and when you are in sight you have evade (with FPs rerolls from Luke's SS and Leia). It has the speed to make deep strike's when needed. And mouse droids make Leia's CE reach the deep striking Snowspeeder. It even has damage reduction. Facing Vong? No problem, stick the speeder up front, they can't spit on it or thud bug it, and if the bombs go off, it's only 10 damage. Or just zoom the speeder over and kill Nom. This squad also has disruptive (Go ahead Gobuck - speed that Yoda with Kybuck into my pack - you're NOT gonna swap him out with GOWK). It has double accurate shot (something a surprising number of squads DID NOT have at the tournament, which I capitalized on). I like this squad.

All squads (until a ban and/or errata change happens) much consider how they will handle GOWK. And this squad is no different.

I still have yet to kill a GOWK without direct damage, with ANY squad.

But that doesn't mean you can't win games against him without direct damage or Vong. Timed games anyway. He is a defensive supernova, but offensively not amazing. So you kill everything else. Simple as that. Obi usually can't do enough damage alone. Speed and accurate shot help this goal immensely. And this squad has both. Alot of people thought this team had no counter to GOWK. In a way that's true - but it has a solid way to beat a GOWK team, if not GOWK himself.

I ran this squad (except with R2 w/ sensor, 4 mouse droids and 2 uggies instead of Lobot) against Deri (fingersandteeth) a couple of weeks before the tournament, with him running GOWK, Rex and Dash. I handled him easier than I thought. Anytime I beat Deri - I know I have a tough squad. Beating Deri playing GOWK - it's a force to be reckoned with. I knew it was tough, but I didn't realize HOW tough. I killed everyone on the team except GOWK, and then I ran and shot, ran and shot (or flew and shot as the case was.) Deri and I talked afterward, and I told him that I wished I could have free gambit getters from Lobot instead of built in. Then I did the math and realized I could fit in Lobot instead of 4 mouse droids, 2 uggies and R2 w/ Sensor (Duh!) Once I realized that, Deri strongly encouraged me to change it to Lobot. For this team to work, I HAVE to have a couple mouse droids, but even always bringing in 3 I guess there was still a little room for squad customization, Lobot's greatest stregnth. Lobot can be a boon or a liability. I would lose 10 hp, 4 defense, it's a trap and recon. Also - if R2 get's sniped - it's only 9 points. But Lobot does have evade now - so his survivability at least now usually has a save roll. So I made the switch. 7 base activations, up to (and usually) 13 activations total (with Dodonna calling the shots tempo-wise). If I faced activations, I would bring in 4 Mouse droids (You can really spread out Leia's CE with this), an uggie (just in case you gotta blow a door) and a jawa (even if not facing droids, he's a 5pt shooter that now has mobile and evade, and helps combine fire if nothing else). Of course if I faced a low activation squad with high damage output (ie GoBuck), then I bring in 3 mouse droids and a human bodyguard. Facing droid armies or another Snowspeeder? Bring the Jawa Scavenger. Best of all they are all free. You lose them, your opponent gets no points. Ah Lobot - how I love your reinforcements!

So - knowing my squad - I had to pick a map. I was intent on using the chancellor's thrown room (Big starship) until the night before. After my show on Friday night before the big tournament I finally had a moment to analyze maps. I layed out several choices, and set my pieces up, checked lines of sight, etc. So many maps were bad for my fat snowspeeders butt. Either I couldn't zoom around easily, or I stick out and can get shot up. I would not do well in the close quarters fighting of the train station, bespin or the ruined base. I would have trouble moving around in Muunilinst Grand Plaza (cs), tatooine or the Death Star. Muunislinst Commerce Plaza, Coruscant, Hoth Outpost, Chrisophsis, (Hard-board) Starship, Rancor Pit, Jedi Hall of Judgment, were too wide open with too few places to hide. My biggest fear was facing a towed Rex on the Hardboard. Nowhere to hide the Snowspeeder that Rex couldn't tow and pop it for 80 possible damage. Yes I have evade, but still. I didn't consider Taris closely enough until then. I think most people figure that the right side in general stinks. I do too, with most squads. There's not much room to hide, and it's really hard to get a nice offensive strike going across the vast space in the middle. That is, unless you have pure speed on your side. And of course you can get first round gambit WITHOUT movement breakers. The left side you CANNOT get first round gambit without movement breakers. This is VERY IMPORTANT. So I have a squad that will most likely out-activate, and I can throw a (free) mouse droid into gambit after they are all activated for the secure 5 gambit points, and then from then on - they play on MY TERMS. I learned this lesson well from Aaron <Lobosteele> in the GenCon Championships 2 years ago, when we had a mirror squad (San, Boba Bh, Aurra JH), and his reinforcements were 5 grans. I didn't stop to think that with only 1 accurate shooter, I could only snipe 1 Gran per round, and after losing the first initiative and having to go first - he just trotted his gran into gambit at the end of round one, and put me in the bad position of catch-up. With my 2009 squad on Taris, they are FORCED to make the offensive trek across the vast open space, while I am shooting the crap out of them with my super speedy and or accurate guns, all while mobiling back to safety. This was a lesson learned from Bill and Matt (and others) at GenCon 2 years ago with Mustafar. Big mobile guns on a map with a vast empty center scares people from taking action. Of course - I have the speed to work from the other side too, but seeing how most people chose the left side - I end up with the "bad" side which actually worked to my advantage and to my opponent's disadvantage. I did a silent internal "YES!" when people chose the left side, because I also got to set up second, and counter which angle they would attempt their approach. Once the set-up rules changed (as they should have) to loser of map roll chooses side or sets-up second, you have to consider how your team plays from the "bad" side. I used to try and take a map with fairly even sides (ie no "bad" side), to even the playing field. Another lesson from Bill and Matt and others from last years GenCon; if your team has the advantage on the "bad" side, then your map will be a huge asset. Finally - taking a cue from Kelly (AKA Dr.Divot - GenCon '07's Champion), I chose a lesser known map, that people will often choose the wrong side on. When I lost to him in the Championships in '07 (one of my 2 losses, the other being to Aaron <Lobosteele>) we played on his map: Geonosis. The right side sucks, very hard to get anywhere quickly, much less to gambit. But the left side sucks too (why it was banned) - since it is so wide open. After careful consideration, I realized Lobot could not be safe from a towed Boba, BH, and therefore I had to make the hard uphill trek from the right. Obviously I still lost, but he congratulated me on choosing the correct side. He had caught many others in the mistake of choosing the left, and capitalized and easily won. Our game was essentially lost on his gambit lead. What a great strategy! Taris is not as well known of a map as other maps, and I can get the gambit lead from either side usually, or force them to put pieces in danger while I remain safe. I felt it was an epiphany of a map choice the night before, and I can safely say it was my MVP for the tournament.

So I had my squad, and I had my map - and I had to get to sleep - it was like 3am!!!

Unfortunately, I have a broken tooth, and no money or insurance to fix it (boy it's fun being a broke actor!) - and the pain comes and goes. That night it came with a vengeance! I probably slept no more than 2 hours before the tournament. But don't throw me a pit party, it obviously somehow strangely worked for me. Perhaps the euphoric state of sleep deprivation made me play better. Luckily, my tooth didn't hurt at all during the tournament. Or maybe I was just so focused my brain refused to acknowledge it.

Wow - I can rattle on can't I? I wanted to do a thorough report, but I think this has crossed the line into excessive. I think I will break this up and report the actual match-ups in my next post!

Wow, Tim! You don't post as often as many of us, but that was a good one! :) (this coming from a fellow rambler, lol)

I was hoping I'd get a rematch with you, but alas, it was not to be. Congrats again!

Thanks! I'm sure we'll face off at some point during the 4 days of GenCon!

See you there. :)

It's true, GOWK simply couldn't be killed. I think I could eventually whittle him down, but I think you HAVE to kill everyone else first, or else they will be your doom. I spend most of the match killing everything else, there's just not enough time left to kill Gowk. I think it was it was a strategy that not alot of people thought of, but it worked.

As far as the Snowspeeder's damage - I actually only ended up 1 game with the Snowspeeder with 10 damage left (VS Matt). Deri got only 30 hp off it, but the reason it seemed dramatic was that Kyle Katarn could have tripled and killed him like 3 times (keep in mind he could have GREATER MOBILE tripled with wedge and the TBS vigo). Lou got some (was it 40?) damage on him. He had one nice YodaBuck run on me, but since I brought a bodyguard that game, he caused a little damage on almost everyone, but didn't kill anything but a few mouse droids and the bodyguard. As far as the Snowspeeder being damaged, that's it. All other matches I believe it was untouched. I think the only non-reinforcement character I lost all day was Juno Eclipse to Matt.
