Admiral Ace showed up at tonights tourny. Each of us went 3-0 for the night with him ahead on points so he got the lone prize booster for winning. I don't know his full squad (if he wants he can post it with how his games went later), but i know his rares were Thrawn and Kyp. First booster I pulled Arica who I had thought would be a decent sealed piece with all the low HP pieces in sealed games. Second booster was even better. Palpy in his throne. Arica with practially unlimited FP could be nasty. I ended up playing the 2 of them plus 2 of the Veteran Rebel Commandos and an Ewok Scout ( I didn't notice they were melee or I would have used something else) for a 98 point squad.

Game 1 vs T with Thrawn/R2/Vigo/shooter Filler. Played on the hardback map. Took advantage of my 4 out 5 pieces having stealth so he had to move up to shoot at me. Palps evaded most of what came at him and when his fodder came too close my shooter blew them away. Low point on the game I gambled and stuck Arica out too far to get a cunning assisted BB on the Vigo, Thrawn, and one of his scrub shooters. I put 40 on Thrawn, and killed the Vigo, but needing a single 7 or better for the scrub I rolled a pair of 3's for my twin, fprr and got a 6 leaving him alive. Round ends and Thrawn wins him iniative. He needs a 15 to to hit her with the scrub. He gets a crit and killing her. My turn I was able to finish of the scrub with a commando and the game went to time with me winning on points. He had Thrawn and his Vet Commando left I think. I had Palpy, a Commando, and my Ewok.

Game 2 vs J. Played on the Rancor Pit. He had Lobot, the Jawa, a Mouse Droid, Sandtrooper Commander, Bothan Commando. Not much to report on this one. The only damage I took was an Accurate Cunning from the Jawa put 30 on Arica early. She responded with a BB that took down him and Lobot. After that anything that came close got picked apart by her and the Vet Commandos. Low point and high point was another triple miss (both twins plus a fprr) on the Mouse Droid followed up by moving my Ewok Scout up 4 to base it. He missed his attack too, but hit on his fprr from palps to finally kill the MD.

Game 3 vs A. Still on the Rancor Pit. He played Arica, Leia, Bacta tank, Dignitary, Whiphid Tracker, Some trooper. Started off with both of us planting our Emplacement pieces in Gambit. Memorable part was me exposing one of the commandos to get a grenade on 5 of his pieces. (whiphid, dignitary, Leia, Arica, bacta tank). After that though Leia moved up to hit the commando for 20. Then the dignitary hit him for another 20. Since he only had 10 left and barring horrible dice luck on A's part Arica was going to finish him off anyway I used Palpy's 3FP for the round to hit Leia with Force Lightning 3. She was still alive, but barely. Dignitary and my Commando both fried. After that I easily finished off Leia with my Arica. The end came down to his Arica (with 20 on her) and Bacta Tank (full HP) vs my Arica, Palps, and second Commando (all three full HP). Started the round with my Arica twining her for 40 to drop her to 10. His activation he unofficially conceeded. he moved Arica up near Palpy and ended his activation. Palpy FP2'd her for 20 to kill her.

Other random notes 2 players pulled Vader. Neither one faced me. Don't know if Admiral Ace played either of them. Prize bboster he pulled Arica number 3 of the night so I didn't mind losing out on the booster so much.

Do you think squads would have been better at 120 than 100? So far I went to a 120 tourney and thought the cost was perfect, I didn't think a 100 would have been that great...

100 seemed ok at mine. I don't really know how much difference the extra 20 points would have made. For my squad it would have probably meant I added 3 of the 5-8 point scrub shooters I'd pulled. Basically the stuff that was only going to be easy point kills anyway.

My LGS will most likely always be 100 points for sealed since there was such a problem from people not having enough points with all 14 pieces they pulled to hit the 120 point total back in the A&E sealed tourny.

Yes, as Homer said, I had GREAT pulls in Kyp and Thrawn. I also pulled a mouse droid so I could get a mini swap. The rest of the squad was a Sandtrooper Officer (fantastic piece in this format) a sandtrooper, bespin guard, and an ewok, all mostly for activations. Obvious tactic would be to out-activate, swap in Kyp, and quad opportunist. So yes, I really couldn't have hoped for more in a sealed. I decided to use the Rancor Pit.

First game was against a kid with a lot of activations, mostly because his rares were Jerjerrod and Logray (ouch) and he had plenty of points left for filler. The one thing going for him was that he had a lot of stealth characters (I didn't pull any accurate shot) and had me out-activated. It didn't really matter that much however. I was on the left, and on round 1 I had swapped into gambit, and on round 2 Kyp had run up to kill two pieces, before being swapped away. When my opponent saw the tactic and realized he would never get to damage Kyp, he turned the corner and more or less ran right at me in a desperation move. The massacre was over by round 4. 1-0.

Second match was against Adam who had Arica and Leia, and again, lots of stealth. We were on the Rancor Pit again, and again I was on the left. Adam did a great job of keeping his figures in cover, and there wasn't much I could do other than set up for the swap. On the second turn I was able to position my mouse droid 7 away from Leia while staying out of LoS. He couldn't get a shot without exposing a piece. Then I ran up my ewok, based BOTH Leia and Mara, and decided to kill Leia first. I rolled terribly, missing two of the attacks and leaving her alive. He put a little bit of damage on Kyp in response, but with the auto-initiative win Kyp was able to quad at the beginning of the next round, killing Leia for good and putting 40 on Mara. He tried to do some damage to Kyp to little or no effect, and when I swapped Kyp out for the Sandtrooper Officer, Mara died soon after. All that was left was clean up duty, and once again, the game was over by the 4th round. 2-0.

3rd round was against one of the Vaders. Because we were only playing 100 points, he didn't have much else, and with only 3 activations, I had him severely out-activated. Still, with the reflect and the Djem-so, I was a little weary. Kyp would have to be money on his rolls. Once again, we were on the Rancor Pit, and again, I was on the left. My opponent did a great job of staying hidden, gaining force points. I was able to pick off one of his other activations early. Finally, when Vader showed himself, I swapped in to quad him, hitting on 2 of the 4 attacks and doing 60 damage. Vader made both Djem-so saves and hit back for 40. Somewhere in there I managed a 20 damage shot on Vader where he missed both the reflect and the dark armor. On the next round, the kid taunted that Kyp was about to get tripled and killed. I smiled, auto-won initiative, and then activated Thrawn to swap Kyp with my ewok sitting two squares further back. He just told me that was messed up, and took the AoO to move and attack Kyp. Kyp responded by hitting on his first two opportunist attacks, killing vader. 3-0 and the tourny win. My pulls really dictated how well I did, as each game was over by the 4th round, and I commented that the art of the release tournament is trying to win with bad pulls rather than perfect pulls. Either way, I still think I built and played it well, and it was really just up to me to not screw up. It's unfortunate we couldn't fit in another round for me and Homer to square off, since that would have been a fantastic game.

I didn't really mind the 100 point limit either. I ended up playing another sealed at my LGS on Sunday where we also did 100 and it worked quite well. Not sure if the outcomes of either would have been any different with 20 more points. Not that I want to detail the entire other tournament here, but this weekend was basically "A Tale of Two Releases Tournaments" for me. After telling people on Sunday about how good my pulls were on Friday, and that the only dissapointment was that I didn't have the challenge of trying to win with bad pieces, I got just that. I had the worst pulls of the Sunday tournament (they weren't horrible, but everyone else had incredible pulls). Fortunately, my LGS said all maps were legal and so with Arica and handful of stealth in hand, I took out dreaded Mustafar and was able to win that tournament as well, winning two of my games by scores of 19-7, and 5-0. So at least I backed up all my talk about "it doesn't matter what you pull, it's how you play. So all around it was a great weekend for me: two release tournaments, both wins, in two wildly different ways.

Thanks for posting the recap Homer.

Yeah, a matchup of our 2 squads would have been interesting. Except for Palpy on the throne everything in my squad had stealth so you would have had to come after me. Would have been nice to face a melee piece that actually had to come within 6 of the chair.

Would've all come down to rolling, lol. Ace would likely get Kyp's Opportunist on Palpatine at least once or twice, and barring a roll of 1 for init, you'd only get to Lightning/Push a scrub in return. So, it definitely would've been interesting. 'Course, if Ace rolled anything like I did with Arica on Thursday night, he wouldn't have killed anything. :P

Nice job to both of you.

Ace, you should've gone up to the Tourney Organizer at that second store afterwards and say "See, that's why there are official rules for events as to what maps you can/can't play." :P

Even though we tend to allow some of the custom/non-legal maps at the Cincinnati venues here, we still stick to not allowing Mustafar, Geonosis, Ossus, or Korriban at all.

LOL, no doubt Lobo. Trust me, they know. The funny thing was when they announced anything was legal, it was me who was the one who immediately complained, with my argument being that "I'll just play Mustafar." I HATE not playing legal maps and am usually the enforcer of such rules. For constructed events, we are 100% legit on the rules. However, the reasoning behind all maps being allowed in this tournament was that a few of the younger kids wanted to play their Map Pack maps, and the tourney director conceded, his reasoning being that it was just a sealed tournament and not a constructed one. I just shrugged and said "fine." When the others saw my map choice, they half-jokingly complained, but not enough to warrant a switch. To be fair, I "only" played two games on Mustafar and the player using Palpatine had a nasty JC map where he could completely ensconce him in gambit where you couldn't even get a shot off unless you opened the door to his room (and you know what Palps would have done then). So yeah, there was a lot of brokeness going on, not just with me. Granted, had I lost map on either of those games, I was probably toast. :)

The Greenfield tourney was completely legit, had a great turn-out, and was run very well. The only disappointment was the lack of a Admiral/Homer final throwdown. Oh well, there is always next time. (Interesting side note, I've been to the Greenfield store about 5 or 6 times and only played Homer once. What's with that?)
